Born October 7, 1936 in Matheson, Ontario. Died October 7, 2025 at the Mississauga Trillium Hospital after a nine-month cancer journey.

Edie was the beloved daughter of James Bolton Smith and Edith Patricia Smith (nee Bentley). She is survived by her cherished brother James Bolton Smith (Jim), wife Gail, and their family.

She is also survived by her three children, Paul (Diane Miller), Charmaine (David Lindsay) and Alice (Mike Chodoriwsky) and by six grandchildren, Andrew Lamar, Greg Lamar (Vicky Murell-Lamar), Tim Lindsay (Liz Maraston), Sarah Lindsay Pires (Roberto Pires), Natalie Chodoriwsky (Matthew Burnett-Stuart) and Kristen Peck (Miguel Peck).

She was the doting great-grandmother of Jack, Octavia, Oliver, Cameron, Milo and Leila Alice. Nothing delighted her more than their visits and seeing their pictures and hearing about their antics.

Edie cherished her lifelong friendships with three amazing women, Gloria Cousins, Carmel Gueldenstubbe (predeceased) and Barb Sexton.

Although Edie was born in Matheson, she moved with her parents to the Kirkland Lake area at a very young age and spent her formative years there. She was a proud Kirkland Laker and loved to tell stories about meeting people from her hometown in unexpected places around the world.

Edie graduated from the Commercial Course at Kirkland Lake Collegiate and Vocational Institute in 1953. She used her excellent training in typing, stenography and other office skills during 50 plus years in the workplace. She experienced and embraced the enormous technological changes in the business world over the latter part of the 20th century and beyond. The first transcription machine Edie used recorded voices on a wax cylinder! A law office she worked at in Washington utilized one of the very first commercial computers. She continued to update her skills and knowledge as technology changed over the decades. The excellence of her typing and transcription skills was such that she was hired to transcribe the debates of the Ontario Legislature (Hansard).

As a single mother of three young children in the early 1960’s Edie faced many challenges, but she was assisted by the loving support of her parents and her lifelong friends. She was resilient and strong and faced the numerous medical challenges of her last 15 years with the same determination.

Edie was a big personality in a small package. She had a sharp wit and a keen facility with words. She liked to have fun, sing and dance and was the life of every party.

She valued family above all, keeping in touch with many cousins and their families via social media to share stories and history.

The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Regency Manor Retirement Home in Port Credit for the wonderful care they took of Edie during the last two years. We would also like to thank Dr. Shruti Gupta, Tetiana Brygidyr, and the rest of the Palliative Team of the Mississauga Trillium Hospital that cared for Edie at home and in the hospital during her last illness.

A Celebration of Life for Edie will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at Turner & Porter Peel Chapel, located at 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga. Visitation with the family will begin at 10 a.m. with spoken reminiscences at 11. Reception to follow. The service will be livestreamed from 10:45.
