In Celebration of

Dr. Thomas Holston Yates

October 30, 1935 -  May 5, 2018

Passed away peacefully at Bridgepoint Active Healthcare, Toronto on Saturday, May 5, 2018 in his 83rd year. Loving and very proud father of Todd & his wife Karen of Toronto, Tara Leonard & her husband Shawn of Stouffville and Drew of Toronto. Dearest and kindest grandfather of Brittany, Cody, Ryan, Brooke and Adam. Survived by his sister Diane McBurney & her husband Peter of Toronto. Beloved Uncle of Scott, Tracy and Brad McBurney all of Toronto. Born in 1935 in Windsor, Ontario to George and Margo Yates and named for both grandfathers. Attended J.L. Forster C.I. in Windsor before moving to Toronto to attend The University of Toronto Medical School. While at U of T he was the Don of Devonshire House before graduating in 1960. After his internship he specialized in Radiology becoming a founding partner of York Radiology and one of the original staff Radiologists at North York General Hospital. He enjoyed a very successful and fulfilling 36 plus year career and he would tell you that he loved every minute of it. Private by nature and due to his evasive responses to social invitations, he was affectionately known in family circles as, THE MYTH. Tom was an avid Blue Jays fan and ardent follower of the Business News Network. He read multiple newspapers and enjoyed well plotted mysteries. A product of the Fabulous Fifties, he cherished, numerous tapes of retro radio shows, golden oldie musical selections, his red Corvette and prime rib dinners. A modest man of simple tastes, he declined recognition even checking into the care facility as Mr. in lieu of Dr. so as not to receive any special consideration. Tom was kind, generous, often funny and a favorite family member, greeting all with that characteristic and endearing lop-sided grin. A very special thank you to the Doctors and Nurses at St. Michaels, Princess Margaret and Bridgepoint and to his caregivers Francine, Oby and Yvette.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. For those who wish donations may be made in memory of Dr. Tom Yates to North York General Foundation or to The Gerry & Nancy Pencer Brain Trust. Online condolences available through www.turnerporter.ca

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.

Dr. Tom was a first-rate radiologist and top-notch business man. He was a reliable and friendly work colleague and generous to a fault. He loved to party-hardy and enjoy life and it was always a pleasure to be in his company. Tom cared deeply about his kids; he was proud of their accomplishments and empathetic when necessary. Dr. Tom didn't need a lot of "stuff" to be happy. He carried everything he needed in his brilliant mind and compassionate heart. He will be much missed.
