In Celebration of

Doris Elizabeth Shipley

February 9, 1926 -  July 16, 2022

The family is saddened to announce the passing of Betty Shipley (nee MacNeill) at New Horizons Towers on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at the age of 96. Predeceased by her beloved husband Harry (1995). Cherished stepmother of Sharon and Gordon. Adoring grandmother of Rachel Li (Bill), and great-grandmother of Abigail and Charlotte. She will be missed by her brother Ronald MacNeill (Genalda) and their children Elizabeth (Gary), Mike (Helene), Stephen (Sue), and Kathy (Geoff). Also her niece Sue, daughter of her sister Isabel (deceased).

Betty was a dedicated teacher of history and social studies with the Toronto and Ottawa District School Boards. Fittingly, she was a highly engaged global citizen, always up to date on current affairs, and involved with the York Pioneers. A proud Torontonian, she never missed a chance to show off her city as a passionate tour guide and consummate hostess. She travelled the world with an adventurous spirit, especially to take in opera. Here at home, Betty was an avid patron of the arts, with active subscriptions at the Canadian Opera Company, National Ballet of Canada, and the Stratford Festival, just to name a few. She also loved sports, and would cheer on the Blue Jays and the Leafs with gusto. She will be dearly missed by her family and many friends.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held in the fall, on Saturday November 5th, 2022 at 1pm at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W, Toronto. Interment of Betty's cremated remains at Prospect Cemetery at 11am. For those who wish, donations in Bettyโ€™s memory may be made to โ€œThe Princess Margaret Hospital Foundationโ€ may be made through www.turnerporter.ca

Dear Sharon,
Very sad to hear of Betty's transition. Your mum was full of life and a wonderful lady. She had joy In her steps. I remember her fondly. My mum loved her too! Prayers up to you Betty! ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’œ

My sincere condolences Sharon and Gordon on Bettyโ€™s passing. Aunt Betty taught me to knit when we stayed with her and Harry on our trek to Montreal in the summer of โ€˜67 to take in Expo! I was just a young girl, but I remember her warmth and generosity, and I know that our parents enjoyed knowing Betty.
