In Celebration of

David Lippingwell

March 23, 1948 -  July 18, 2024

David passed away peacefully July 18, 2024 at age 76. David was preceded in death by his mother, father and his son, James. Survived by his wife, Teresa, daughter, Jennifer, sister, Kathleen, grandsons, Ben and Evan and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

David was born in England but always had a love for travel so when he met Teresa he was very eager to experience a new Country, Canada. Thinking he would only be here for two years he ended up making a home here for 56 years. For nearly 40 years David was a Justice of the Peace. It was a job he loved and he approached that job with the same skills and virtues he applied in all his life, with intelligence, wit and humor, with a large dose of common sense and compassion. Anyone who remembers David, knows how much he loved to sing and play guitar and piano. He loved making up little satirical ditties that gently poked fun at himself, his colleagues and life in general. He also loved sports, especially soccer and hockey. He played both, even though he only learned how to skate at the ripe old age of 23.

I think he always had to stop by crashing into someone or into the boards! It was a great disappointment to him that his beloved Tottenham Hotspurs could never quite achieve the glory days of the Jimmy Greaves era. Equally so, he never got to see the Leafs win a Stanley Cup. But David truly excelled at being a husband and father. We really lived and enjoyed our life together and never put off doing things we wanted to do. We loved and supported each other through good and bad times. He was most proud of our two children, Jennifer and James. I think a little of him died a while ago when James passed away. We love them both. They are the best of us. David never liked a fuss over birthdays, anniversaries or holidays. Neither would he like a fuss over his death.

So, please, when you remember Dave, donate to your favourite charity in memory of a good man. Private Arrangements entrusted by Turner & Porter Funeral Directors – Peel Chapel. Online condolences may be made at through this website.

David was an exemplary judicial officer. He was respected by his colleagues and the bar. In his courtroom there was always a sense of fairness and respect for everyone involved. He is greatly missed.

I am saddened to hear of J.P. Lippingwell’s passing. I appeared before him many times as counsel. He was a decent and caring human being. He always tried to engage all individuals appearing before him, in the many languages that he could say a few words in. Clients were put at ease by him. He was a true gentleman. My sympathies are extended to his whole family.

David was a delightful colleague, witty and kind. He was a superb justice of the peace, who put the public first.
My deepest sympathy to his family at this sad time.

Terry and Jennifer, condolences for the loss of your lovely husband and father.

As well as being a friend of David's for about 50 years, I was his court clerk on countless occasions for decades. There was never a day in court that lacked some humour, notwithstanding how seriously and fairly he took his responsibilities. One day, over tea on a court recess David showed me a judgment, in limerick form, he was going to give on the current case.

"Sir, I have listened carefully to what you have said, but I think you have gone soft in the head. You have howled and cried, but I am quite satisfied, that the light that you went through was red."

Sadly, David delivered a rather traditional judgment.

One of David's ditties (not delivered in court) was based on Gilbert& Sullivan's: I am the very model of a modern Major-general. It commenced: "I am the very model of a Justice most meticulous; I've informations summary, indictable, ridiculous." I wish I could remember all of it. I know many people will have enjoyed this.

I'm sure there will be a lot of laughter in that great courtroom in the sky.
