David was an exemplary judicial officer. He was respected by his colleagues and the bar. In his courtroom there was always a sense of fairness and respect for everyone involved. He is greatly missed.
I am saddened to hear of J.P. Lippingwell’s passing. I appeared before him many times as counsel. He was a decent and caring human being. He always tried to engage all individuals appearing before him, in the many languages that he could say a few words in. Clients were put at ease by him. He was a true gentleman. My sympathies are extended to his whole family.
David was a delightful colleague, witty and kind. He was a superb justice of the peace, who put the public first.
My deepest sympathy to his family at this sad time.
Terry and Jennifer, condolences for the loss of your lovely husband and father.
As well as being a friend of David's for about 50 years, I was his court clerk on countless occasions for decades. There was never a day in court that lacked some humour, notwithstanding how seriously and fairly he took his responsibilities. One day, over tea on a court recess David showed me a judgment, in limerick form, he was going to give on the current case.
"Sir, I have listened carefully to what you have said, but I think you have gone soft in the head. You have howled and cried, but I am quite satisfied, that the light that you went through was red."
Sadly, David delivered a rather traditional judgment.
One of David's ditties (not delivered in court) was based on Gilbert& Sullivan's: I am the very model of a modern Major-general. It commenced: "I am the very model of a Justice most meticulous; I've informations summary, indictable, ridiculous." I wish I could remember all of it. I know many people will have enjoyed this.
I'm sure there will be a lot of laughter in that great courtroom in the sky.
I was so lucky to have 58 years knowing you. Rest in Peace my love.
