In Celebration of

Daniel William Ewing

January 14, 1967 -  February 22, 2025

We are heartbroken to announce the death of Daniel William Ewing, at the age of 58.

Dan was born in Port Colborne, Ontario, the third child of Brian and Bonnie (nee Baker). His family lived in Indonesia when Dan was young and eventually settled in Sudbury which was fitting as Dan loved winter activities.

Dan had a gifted scientific mind, which would lead him to pursue a PhD in mechanical engineering. Early in his career as an academic, he would travel the world to attend conferences or conduct research. But his happiest times were found at home with his beloved wife, Lisa, and his daughter, Tessa, who was the joy of his life. Dan was an amazing dad and the bond he had with Tessa will always endure.

In addition to LIsa and Tessa, he leaves to mourn his mother Bonnie, sister Joanne (Randy), brother Jeff (Joanne), his nieces and nephews and his loving Spaniel, Maisy. She will miss their long walks in High Park.

Please join us on Saturday, March 1st at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto from 10-noon with a celebration starting at 11am. Although flowers are always welcome, please also consider a donation to Pancreatic Cancer Canada or St Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, Toronto.

Dan gave me my first engineering research opportunity when I was taking his Fluids class at McMaster.

He was a great mentor throughout my Master's degree. And took a significant amount of his own personal time to edit through my first two journal publications after I'd already left Mac and started my PhD at the University of Toronto.

I always admired Dan's intelligence. And his ability to cut directly to the issue at hand without beating around the bush. I appreciated his honesty and always knew his priority was to improve the work we were doing.

He really shaped the researcher that I am today.

Without the opportunity he gave me, I don't think I'd have gone on to be a professor.

Thanks Dan. You'll be missed.

Mike
