In Celebration of

Constance Evelyn Young

February 28, 1922 -  October 28, 2024

Connie, in her 103rd year, in Port Credit, beloved and cherished wife of (the late) Murray for close to 70 years. Much loved mother of Margaret Hinton (David) of Fernie, B.C., Gillian Crawford (John) of Lismore Farm, River John, N.S., Stewart (the late Laura Graham) of Halifax, N.S., and Robert (Joelle Martin) of Ottawa.

Predeceased by sisters Peggy Drysdale, Lorna Allsopp, and brother Ted Pirie. Proud and loving grandmother of Gillian Horton (Simon), Rory and Katy Crawford, Rosemary and Martha Young, and Isla, Augusta and MacGillivray Young-Martin. Loving Aunt to many nieces and nephews and their families.

Born in 1922 in Montreal, she was the daughter of Edward and Millicent Pirie (both from Inverness, Scotland). Raised in Lachine and Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, she earned her degree (B.S. Home Economics) at MacDonald College, McGill University. She trained as a dietitian at the Royal Vic Hospital and served in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps as a Nursing Sister. During her placement in Calgary, she seized every occasion to hike and ski in the mountains. She also learned to drive a tank! That spirit for adventure carried on throughout her life and inspired her children to seek out new experiences. She later worked at St.Michael’s Hospital in Toronto as a Dietitian.

She and Murray met in Calgary, settled in Toronto, then Applewoods Acres, and eventually built their new home in Port Credit in 1966. There they continued their happy life raising their 4 children. Despite her very busy life at home, Connie was also active volunteering at her church and with countless charities, including the Canadian Cancer Society. She participated in many clubs, including the CFUW, and explored all life-long learning opportunities. She was described by many as a true giver. In 2012, she was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal for her outstanding contributions to her community. She had an unparalleled zest for life, including skiing into her 80’s, and remained active and curious until the very end.

We’d like to offer our deep gratitude to the many friends, neighbours, and extended family who were so kind to Connie in her later years.

A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, November 22nd at 2:00pm at First United Church in Port Credit (151 Lakeshore Rd West Mississauga)

In lieu of flowers, donations to Christ First Church (Mississauga) or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Our family sends our love and sympathy to the Young’s . We have fond memories of visiting Connie and Murray in their Port Credit home. Always, welcoming us warmly with happy hour and snacks, good conversation, genuine smiles and interest in what was happening in our lives. We always arrived to see the Nova Scotia flag flying and warm welcomes on the front porch!
I love this photo of Connie at the helm! So appropriate and joyful!

Connie was a very special lady, I feel fortunate to have known her. She was so involved until the very end. We had an afternoon tea at the church and they asked people to wear some kind of hat. Connie made one up with a paper place and some ribbon........it was fantasic. She was always involved. I remembeer she and Murray walking out to their car after church , they were always holding hands and Murray always helped her get into the car. He was such a gentleman. I have such fond memories of the two of them.
