On July 24th, 2020 a fireball completed its journey on earth. Unable to be extinguished, it ascended into the heavens with unrelenting persistence and determination. Mom knew few boundaries in life. She taught us all great lessons in how she re-started and regained her life after the passing of our dear father, Earl 20 years ago. She learned how to drive at the age of 68 having relied on 43 years of Dad's driving, comfort and care in our northern Ontario hometown, Onaping. Her first trip upon obtaining her license a year later was a 365km solo drive from Onaping to Mississauga to see her grand-daughters.
Mom was relentless in conquering her fears, overcoming her shyness and finding new happiness in life without Dad, In 2009 Mom made the bold move from her hometown of Sudbury to Mississauga where she established a great circle of friends in Heritage Glen, a retirement residence in Mississauga. Here Mom blossomed and became a social butterfly. Never shy to jump on a bus or enjoy a trip to the casino, she was always on the move, living independently, loving life.
In December of 2017 Mom had her first of what would be many health events. Conquering the odds after three months of hospitalization and returning home to again lost ground. 2018 would see Mom returning to the Credit Valley Hospital over 20 times, spending one out of three days in 2018 in the hospital. Undeterred, the fireball kept lighting up the skies. In December of 2018 Mom suffered a serious stroke, missing Christmas celebrations for the second year in a row, she refused to let the stroke hold her back and through determined physio, occupational and recreational therapy, she returned to her home in March in a wheelchair, but by no means confined.
Mom moved to a new retirement home called Erin Meadows in Mississauga in May of 2018. A brand new facility, with new friends, fabulous staff and experiences that she cherished and adored. Although her health issues persisted, they never wore her down, that is until her second stroke hit her on June 23rd and despite a very poor prognosis, Mom fought hard and hung on until she could no more. On the morning of July 24th, Mom was called by Dad to use her fireball to brighten the heavens and get up there with him for another game of cribbage. She passed peacefully in the arms of her children.
May the angels greet her and the heavens treat her, for her memories will live on forever in us. Sadly missed, but never forgotten by her husband Earl (predeceased 2000), daughter Suzanne Winn (Keith), son Charles (Anita), son Gord along with grandchildren Kevin, Kris, Emily, Aleksandra, Erik and Liam, and great-grandchildren Cassidy, Kaitlyn and Kyra.
At Mom's wish, a private family service was held on July 25th. Cremation and burial with Earl at Maplecrest Cemetery in Dowling will take place at a future date.
Donations in Mom's memory can be made to the Onaping Falls Food Bank.
