Chester Ozimek

July 10, 1922 - April 10, 2020

Chester found eternal peace with admirable serenity at age 97, on April 10, 2020, at Copernicus Lodge, Toronto. Cherished husband of 59 years to Genowefa (Czechowski), loving father to Renata (Elio) and Ted, proud dziadek to Robert, Ewa and Simon.
Born in Remki, Poland, Chester was taken to a farm near Oldenburg, Germany in 1939 as a forced laborer during the Second World War. Having learned German, he and many others, escaped amid the ensuing chaos of the Allied advance in the area, eventually joining the Pierwsza Polska Dywizja Pancerna (a division of the Polish Armed Forces), under General Maczek. After the war, Chester moved to Yorkshire, England. He emigrated to Yorkton, Saskatchewan Canada in 1950 and became a Canadian citizen while always celebrating his Polish heritage.
In Canada he worked in the forests of Northern Ontario and on farms in Brantford Ontario before settling in Toronto and becoming a roofer. In 1959, Chester returned briefly to Poland where he met Genowefa, his future wife. They were married in Toronto at St. Stanislaus Church in 1960. Chester went on to establish a family, start his own roofing business, and become an active member of his faith community serving on the parish Komitet for over 50 years.
Chester had an adventurous spirit, enjoying Westerns and war movies, reading historic novels and romances, and travelling to far off places including Greece, the Far East, and Australia. Most of all Chester enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. They enjoyed many rides on the subway, days at the park, and lunches at the Mandarin.
Family, faith, and friendship were the 3 most important things in Chester’s life. Thanks to the wonderful staff at Copernicus Lodge for the great care and comfort provided.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a private burial will take place on Wednesday, April 10th at Park Lawn Cemetery. A memorial mass will be held to celebrate the life of Chester Ozimek at a later date. Donations in Chester’s memory may be made to Copernicus Lodge Foundation or to St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Online condolences may be made through www.turnerporter.ca
