In Celebration of

Berta Gladys Gallo (née Ferreira)

November 27, 1942 -  April 7, 2021

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Berta Gladys Gallo on April 7, 2021, in Mississauga.

She will be terribly missed by the love of her life and devoted husband, Jorge Gallo, and her loving children Ricardo (and his wife Shireen), Rossana (and her husband Mike), and Sandra (and her husband Sam). She was the proudest and most loving Nana to her grandchildren - Aleczander, Marissa, Jessica (Sean), Adam (Teya), Nicholas, Ryan, Kaitlyn, and Tyler - who will forever hold her dear in their hearts. Her loss will also be felt deeply by loving family members in her beloved Uruguay, including her sister Nelly, many loving nieces and nephews, and her sister-in-law Ana. Now in peace, she will be reunited in Heaven with her mother, Maria Ferreira, and her father, Elbio Ferreira.

Berta was a kind and generous soul, with a compassionate and down-to-earth attitude who made friends easily and will be missed by many. If our tears could be harvested we would replenish oceans, but she would want us to carry on in love, remember her fondly, do good deeds in her name, and “enjoy the little things in life.”

Berta’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and support staff at Trillium Health Partners. In particular, Dr. Werneck and Dr. Jovanovic, who provided outstanding care and support, as well as Mr. Jeffrey Brown and O.R. Manager Genny Micallef (and her entire team) who showed so much compassion to our family and patiently supported us while we said our good-byes.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Canada in memory of Berta Gallo by clicking the donation button below or above. When doing so, please include an electronic card to the e-mail recipient bjgallo@rogers.com so Berta's family will be notified of your gift; you can choose to donate anonymously.

We will always remember Mrs.Gallo’s bright smile, loving nature, generous spirit and kindness. She always took the time to talk with everyone at family gatherings and showed a genuine interest in our lives. Although she is gone physically her wonderful spirit lives in her children and grandchildren and she will be remembered fondly by all us who were privileged to be part of her life. We will miss you Mrs. Gallo and the boys will miss your empanadas.

Rest In Peace.

Everyone who knew Berta knew that her family was her world. She loved them all freely and unconditionally. I will never forget how Berta’s eyes would light up when she talked about her kids, their spouses and her grandkids. How she loved talking about how she and Jorge met and about their life long romance. We will miss seeing her beautiful smile and hearing the sound of her laughter.
We have so many beautiful memories the we will hold close to our hearts.
You will never be forgotten.

Rest In Peace

Ricardo and Sandra please accept our deepest sorrow and sympathy on the passing of your dear mother. On the occasions we met her we found her to be a warm and friendly person. Having recently experienced the death of our sister, I know that you will feel this loss greatly, over time it will heal and will be filled with loving memories of the good times you spent with your mother and the loving and caring person she was. RIP Berta.

What we remember most about Mrs. Gallo is that no matter how tough life got she still managed to smile brightly and care deeply for all those around her. She always spoke fondly of her grandchildren and loved being surrounded by her family. We remember her always making an effort to go to her grandchildren's school and sporting events and to be part of the major events in their lives. We will never forget the sweet companionship and love she and Mr. Gallo shared. They were truly inseparable. We will miss seeing her at family birthday celebrations and holidays. These times will never be the same without her presence. We hope she is in peace right now and we send our prayers to her family and hope that soon they too will find peace in her passing.

When I was younger, Nana turned Scrabble into my favourite game. N.B.: I do not mean the go-grab-the-dictionary version of Scrabble; I mean our Scrabble.
I am talking about the version of Scrabble where we invented our own words (you guessed it, words that somehow had a Z, a J, and an X).
I am talking about the version of Scrabble where we guessed the spelling of common words, and more often than not, we would sneak in a silent Q.
I am talking about the version of Scrabble where the words did not even connect, but all the triple word score tiles were occupied.
I am talking about the version of Scrabble that Nana used as a vehicle to teach me an important lesson – sometimes, we need to make our own rules. Sure, there are some fundamentals: love wholly and deeply, live with grace, use the letter tiles to form some semblance of a word, but pave your own path.
Nana taught me that you can flip the script, rewrite the narrative. Did your daughter name her daughter something impossible to pronounce in Spanish (thanks mom)? Practice until what once felt foreign on your tongue makes you beam with pride. Is your house full of boys ganging up on you? Call your Nana – she will protect you. You just selected your fourth “E” tile in a row? Pick again – Nana won’t tell.
Through these lessons, Nana encouraged me to be strong and resilient, and she led by example. She did not have an easy life, but her life was hers. She overcame obstacles, worked for what she had, and appreciated everything.
Although I miss hearing her chew out my brothers for teasing me, I miss her hugs, the sound of her voice saying my name, our days spent playing Scrabble in her apartment, she – along with the memories I cherish and the lessons I have learned – will live on forever.
I love you, my pretty, pretty Nana. Besos xx
