In Celebration of

Bernice Wasylyk

November 9, 1928 -  January 3, 2024

Bernice Wasylyk (nee Rutkowski) passed away on Jan 3rd, at Trillium Hospital at the age of 95 after a brief illness.

Loving mother of Glen (Christine) and Sharon MacKay (Jack). Cherished grandmother of Amy, Beth, Adam MacKay (Jessie) and Casey MacKay. Predeceased by her devoted husband Casey. (2001) Also predeceased by her adored dog “Benji”. Bernice was a very special aunt to many nieces and nephews, and particularly close to niece Chrissy Shemko.

Bernice was the daughter of Jakob and Aniela Rutkowski. Predeceased by her brother John Rutkowski and sister- in-law Julie and sister Kay Shemko and brother-in-law Fred.

Bernice was born in Poland and arrived in Toronto with her family at the age of six. It was there that she later met her husband and began a family that they raised in Mississauga. They built a family cottage at Severn Bridge to be near Bernice's beloved sister Kay and her family.

Bernice spent winters in Florida for decades where she drew her Carriage Village neighbours into her circle of love.

One of Bernice's greatest pleasures was hearing about the day to day lives of her family and friends. She will be missed by all who knew her for her warmth, generosity and compassion.

Friends may call at Turner & Porter "Peel" Chapel, 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga (Hwy 10 N. of Q.E.W), on Friday from 10-11 am. Celebration of Bernice's Life will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 11 am.

I met Bernice in Florida as she was my next door neighbour for many years. She was always friendly and funny to talk to. I feel so blessed to have had those opportunities to spend time with this special woman. Bernice you touched so many lives including me in ways that I will never forget.

Baba, there are so many memories I’ve been thinking back on lately, too many to list! You were the best Baba and I always enjoyed our visits. I know you’re with Pa now & all your other family and friends. Rest well, until we meet again. I miss you & I’ll love you forever.

My Baba knew how to spoil her grandchildren - and also how to make us feel unconditionally loved. Whether she was standing to wave good-bye at the window of her condo or slipping us cash behind our dad's back, she went out of her way to indulge us. She had an unmatched generosity and kindness. She also taught us to love all pets, order an appetizer when you want one and that you don't have to pick up the phone when your favourite show is on. She will be dearly missed.

I have very fond memories of Mrs. Wasylyk (she had such a sweet soul). Our families were very close. We were invited to many of their celebrations in their basement, from wedding and baby showers to grey cup parties. I always felt apart of their family. Bernice always made every one feel welcome, she will be missed!
