In Loving Memory of Bernard “Bernie” Kowal, known affectionately as BK and Grampa, of Mississauga, Ontario, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 12th, 2023, at the age of 89, after a brave battle with cancer. In spite of his diagnosis more than 9 years ago, Bernie enjoyed his life to the fullest.
Born on May 19, 1934, in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Bernie was a loving husband and friend to his devoted wife and travel companion, Diane; and proud father to Laura (Donald) and Melanie (Mark). He leaves behind a legacy as a fun-loving and involved grandfather to Julia, Todd, Kate, and Myles, who were greatly influenced by his warmth and wisdom. This October, Bernie and Diane would have celebrated 59 years of marriage.
Bernie was a trailblazer in the meat industry: starting at Canada Packers before founding his own successful venture, Bernard Kowal Food Products Limited in 1978. He brought clients together from across Canada and the United States, leaving a lasting impact in the Pork Industry. Known for his infectious sense of humour, Bernie's jokes were legendary, and many believed the workday didn't truly start until they shared a laugh with him.
He is also known for his love of classic cars and all things Elvis, Bernie would proudly showcase his prized possession, a 1956 Ford Thunderbird convertible at local shows relishing any praise with a “thank you, thank you very much”. He was also an avid lover of basketball, football, and baseball, especially his beloved Blue Jays, as well as a talented artist, gifting personalized hand-painted caricatures to those near and dear.
The family would like to thank and acknowledge the aid, care and compassion shown by the staff and volunteers at The Dorothy Ley Hospice over the past 3 weeks. The team is truly a wonderful group of people who helped him and his family through his final days.
A private Celebration of Bernard's Life will be held at a later date, where close friends and family will gather to honour his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Dorothy Ley Hospice, in his name, as a fitting tribute to a man whose laughter and love enriched the lives of all who knew him. His legacy of generosity, kindness, and resilience will live on forever in our hearts. May he rest peacefully. Online condolences may be made using this website.
