In her 92nd year, after several illnesses that she fought courageously with every bone in her frail body, Barbara Townsend (née Marsh) drew her last breath surrounded by her family.
Barbara was the eldest daughter of May and Arthur Marsh, town councillors and glass and china merchants in Ashton-under-Lyne, Lancashire, England. She graduated from Ashton Grammar School and then attended Saffron Walden College of Education in Essex near Cambridge, where she studied to become a primary school teacher. Her husband to be, Fred Townsend (dec.2018), was fulfilling his National Service in the army close by. Barbara recalled their first date with mixed feelings. “Our first date was on February 6, 1952, the day that King George died. Fred took me out to a pub. Mum was a member of the Temperance Society and she nearly died when she found out!” Barbara added, “On his leaves from the army, Fred rode home to visit me on his Matchless motorbike named Bessie. He loved me and Bessie, but he hated those years in the army.” On June 2, 1953, Fred and Barbara, with Barbara riding pillion on Bessie, drove down to London to watch the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. In the spring of 1956, they married. They honeymooned in the seaside-town of Blackpool, where Barbara had enjoyed many holidays with her parents and two sisters when she was growing up. Just a few months after their marriage, Fred accepted a job in Canada. The couple sailed from the docks of Liverpool on the RMS Carinthia, bound for Toronto.
Barbara taught a grade one class at Three Valleys Public School in a new suburb of Toronto called Don Mills. By 1959, they had welcomed two children, Jayne and David. However, Barbara was homesick for her family in England, so in 1960 they returned home. They lived in England for seven years and expanded their family with two more children, Julie and Jonathan. Still, Fred yearned to travel and wanted to return to Canada. He secured a job in Montreal and, in 1967, they boarded the RMS Carinthia once again to cross the Atlantic. They lived in Beaconsfield on the West Island of Montreal, where Barbara was very busy supply teaching and serving on various committees at Beaconsfield United Church, in addition to raising their four children. After six years in Montreal, Fred accepted a job in Jamaica, which marked the beginning of their life together stationed in countries in various continents of the world, usually for two- or three-year postings. A fifth child, James, was welcomed into the family while they lived in Iran. Throughout their travels, Barbara made countless friends with whom she enjoyed playing bridge, mahjong, bingo, tennis, and golf.
Barbara and Fred were married for 62 years. On their 60th wedding anniversary, they received a congratulatory message from Buckingham Palace. Fred affectionately referred to his wife as “Bee,” “Bee!” or, sometimes, “Bee?” Barbara was a dedicated mother to Jayne (Harvey, dec.), David (Paula), Julie (Tom), Jonathan (Diane), and James (Jennifer). She was a cherished grandmother to Sara and Aaron; Matthew and Simon; Claire and Cameron; Cassandra, Lyndsay, and Shannon; and Arabella, Kingsley, and London. In her late 80s and early 90s, she was thrilled to become a great-grandmother to Vaughn, Yves and Lev; and Evelyn and Nòra.
Barbara is survived by her sisters, Sandra (Allan) and Margaret (Richard) and her Aunty Margaret (her mother’s youngest sister) and their families in England.
Barbara’s last transition in life was to Wesburn Manor Long-Term Care Home in Etobicoke. The family would like to thank the caring personal support workers and other dedicated staff at Wesburn Manor for taking such good care of Barbara, who was affectionately called “The English Patient” by her children in her final years of dotage.
Barbara was grateful to all who supported and loved her throughout the days of her life.
She requested that, in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to cancer research or to a charity of choice.
