It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Audrey Ruth Rice on July 28, 2024, at the age of 89 following a long and courageous struggle with dementia. Audrey was the beloved wife of the late Donald Bruce Rice, and a devoted mother to Brent Alan Rice, and two pre-deceased children: Scott Kenneth Rice (Tammy) and Anne Elizabeth Rebekah Widdess (Kevin). She was a cherished grandmother to Kyle (Alyssa), Shelby, and Riley, and a loving great-grandmother to Olivia.
Audrey grew up in the High Park neighbourhood of Toronto and moved to Streetsville when she and Don married in 1958. She tirelessly supported the many interests and endeavors of her growing family while shuttling her brood around to Cubs, Scouts and Girl Guides in between soccer, softball, ringette and hockey games. After raising their three active children in the busy GTA, Audrey and Don decided that a slower pace of life was in order so ardently retired in 1990 and moved to Victoria Harbour, Ontario to enjoy the peace and quiet of the beautiful north.
Audrey’s creative and artistic spirit was showcased by her decorative interior household touches as she welcomed the opportunity to make each room in the house comfortable and inviting. Outside, the gardens were always blooming with colourful combinations of flowers and healthy hostas and ferns. Her love of music was always evident during gatherings with family and her dearest friends as she loved to provide accompaniment on the piano during singalongs. An accomplished cook and baker, Audrey was famous for her pies and delicious shortbread cookies at Christmastime, which she loved to share with anyone who visited during the festive season.
Her love for her family always shone through and her generosity and willingness to always put others first cannot be matched. She will be sadly missed by those that have been fortunate enough to receive a warm, embracing hug from her. But those memories will live on.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks and deepest gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff at Creek Way Village, Burlington, for allowing Audrey to live out her final years in dignity and comfort.
Friends and family will be received at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto, starting at 10 AM on Thursday, August 8th, followed by a Funeral Service at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or a charity of your choice in Audrey’s memory would be appreciated.
