Assunta Di Prospero (née Petricca), beloved mother, Nonna, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at the age of 97. Born on February 6, 1928, in Sora, Italy, Assunta lived a life defined by faith, family, sacrifice, and unconditional love.
As a young woman, Assunta bravely immigrated to Canada from Italy with her husband, Giuseppe Di Prospero, who predeceased her. Together, with family they began a new life here, laying the foundation for generations to come through hard work, resilience, and deep devotion to one another.
At the heart of Assunta’s life was her love for her two sons, Enzo and Gaetano. Her devotion to them was unwavering — the quiet, steadfast love of a mother who gave endlessly without expectation. Everything she did was for her family, and her sons remained her pride, her strength, and her greatest accomplishment.
After Giuseppe’s passing, Assunta continued to dedicate her life entirely to her family, most especially helping to raise her two granddaughters, Ashley and Brooke. They were her joy, her purpose, and her constant source of happiness. Her love for them was unconditional and all-encompassing, a reflection of the same care she had poured into her own children.
Assunta was a woman of deep and abiding faith, carrying her trust in God with humility and grace. She was also known for her extraordinary cooking — a true world-class cook in her family’s eyes — using food as another way to love, nurture, and bring people together. No one ever left her home without being fed, cared for, and made to feel they belonged.
She is survived by her sons, Enzo Di Prospero and Gaetano Di Prospero (Sandra); her cherished granddaughters, Ashley Mainelli (Mario) and Brooke Brito (Matthew); and her adored great-grandchildren, Anthony and Alyssa Mainelli, and Luna and Sol Brito. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her strength, her selflessness, her faith in God, and the boundless love she gave to her family.
Her legacy lives on in the lives she shaped, the traditions she passed down, and the love that will forever bind her family together.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” – 2 Timothy 4:7
