With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Angela M. De Freitas, age 97, formerly of Mississauga and more recently, of Guelph, on May 18, 2025, at Guelph General Hospital.
Born in May 1927 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to Alban and Esme dos Santos, Angela lived a long and full life, rooted in love, faith, and service to others.
In 1948, she married her first love, Gerald (“Sonny”) De Freitas, with whom she built a large family and shared many memorable years. Together, they raised four children: Michael (Kathleen), Sandra, Michele, and Jacqueline (Todd). She was pre-deceased by her beloved firstborn, Paula. Angela was a loving grandmother to Christopher, Ashley, Philip, Matthew, Nicole, Victoria, Stephen, and Derek, and a proud great-grandmother to Izabella, Nina and Raiden.
She is also survived by her dear sisters, Yvonne and Patricia, and a wide circle of extended family and friends who were touched by her grace and warmth.
Angela and her family first immigrated to Canada in 1952. She worked as a bookkeeper at Goudies department store in Kitchener, managed the family’s business for many years, then worked at Eaton’s at Square One, but her passions extended far beyond the workplace.
A gifted singer, she led the St. Mary’s Cathedral choir and performed with the Kingstown Chorale in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Later, in Mississauga she joined the St Martin of Tours Choir, with whom she travelled throughout Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and South America. She was also a member and cantor at St. Catherine of Siena Church for over 40 years. Her musicality was matched by her creativity—she was a talented artist, brilliant needleworker, and she found great joy in gardening and bird watching.
Angela was a woman of deep Catholic faith and strong values. She was known for her generosity, always ready to offer her time, skills, and compassion to those in need. She supported numerous charities throughout her life, quietly giving to causes that aligned with her values. She had a sharp mind, a remarkable memory, and a lifelong love of learning. Avid about crossword puzzles and current events, she approached life with curiosity and humour and relished her independence. She had a sweet tooth, made a remarkable macaroni pie and held a lifelong grudge against vegetables.
Angela travelled the world, but her heart was always with her family. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and resilience.
