Andrij Buhel passed away peacefully on Thursday October 24th, 2024.
Andrij was born on December 3, 1926 in Moryantsi, Ukraine to Yuri and Sofia Buhel (nee Fedash). He left Ukraine in 1944, following the death of his father and younger brother, Petro, and ended up in Regensburg, Germany. At the end of the war, Andrij found work in the coal mines outside Manchester, England. Without family, he befriended the Kaczan family and in 1952 ended up following them to Canada.
His first job was at the Loblaw warehouse in downtown Toronto. While working, Andrij took courses in electronic technology and upon completion, began work at the Canadian Admiral Corporation in Port Credit.
Andrij met the love of his life, Halyna Pylypiv, in 1959 in Southampton, Ontario, at a social gathering organized by Orysia Nahnit, who remained a life-long friend. Three years later, Andrij and Halyna were married. Andrij and Halyna continued to gather many life-long friends from Southampton, the University of Toronto Students Club, and from Plast - friends with whom they would celebrate, philosophize, raise children, mourn loses and support each other at all times.
After the closing of Admiral in 1981, Andrij took more courses in electronic technology and began teaching at George Brown College, from where he eventually retired.
Andrij and Halyna have two children - Borys and Oksana - and two grandchildren - Luca and Yuli. Andrij was proud of each and every one of them, and spent much time enjoying their company. Luca and Yuli, in particular, enjoyed time with Dido, who would pick them up after school and then visit different Tim Hortons across the Greater Toronto Area.
The last year and a half of Andrij's life was spent at the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre, where he received attentive and loving care from the entire health-care team - to whom we are deeply grateful.
Andrij will be greatly missed by his family and friends, and remembered for his kindness, quietness and a great sense of humour. Visitation for Andrij will be held at Turner & Porter Neweduk Chapel at 1981 Dundas St.W. Mississauga (east of Erin Mills Parkway.) on Wednesday October 30th from 4 p.m.- 8 p.m. Panakhyda will take place at 7 p.m.
