In Celebration of

Andrew Laut

December 11, 1961 -  January 13, 2019

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Donald Andrew Laut on January 13, 2019 at home after a brave and all-too-brief battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Marianne Zorić and proud and loving father to Nicholas. Son to Don and Jeannette (Hartviksen) and later Jack O’Hara. Son-in-law to Joe and Stefica, brother to Bill and Rob, brother-in-law to Dolly, Joe and Diana, Terezia and Rich, and Vendelin. Delighted uncle to Aiden, Ryan, and Matthew. He leaves behind numerous aunts and uncles and cousins as well. Appreciative and kind friend to Joan and Charles, Jane and Sorel, Isadora, and countless others. He was profoundly grateful for the care and support he received from these friends, including Marina and Alex, who were never far during the days of his illness and rendered invaluable assistance.

Highly respected and indeed even loved by his colleagues at the Immigration and Refugee Board where he was a Member, he was a calm voice of reason in his work and a supportive colleague who mentored many. Caring and responsible, he looked after his mother`s needs, was a pillar of support to his in-laws and to his family at home. Andrew cared deeply about the environment and was passionate about electric cars, especially his Tesla Model 3. He proudly shared his knowledge about its wonders with any curious person. He loved the beach and swimming, science fiction literature especially Heinlein and the Harry Potter novels for their message of the triumph of love. A SpaceX and Elon Musk fan, he was excited by the rocket launches, one of which he attended, and the possibilities of space exploration. His love of Bruce Springsteen only grew stronger over the years. As his family and friends know, when he loved, he loved. Even at the end, he considered himself blessed.

Friends may call at Turner & Porter - Neweduk-Erin Mills Chapel, 1981 Dundas Street West, Mississauga, Thursday from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm (prayers at 8:30). Funeral Mass to be held at Merciful Redeemer Church, 2275 Erin Centre Blvd, Mississauga on Friday, January 18 at 10 am. Cremation at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, or the Canadian Food For Children charity.

Andy meant so much to so many and I still can't believe this all happened so fast. It feels like just yesterday he sat across from me during the Holiday lunch as we chatted about vacation plans. We miss him so much already.

It has been an honour and a pleasure to know him, work with him, manage him and support him and Marianne through his illness. I'm so grateful for having had the opportunity to visit with him the day before his passing.

Andy has left a mark on our work, but most importantly, he's left a mark on our hearts. I am simply heartbroken by Andy's passing and continue to extend my love and support to his family in the days, weeks, months and years to come.

My deepest condolences to Marianne & Nicholas. He was so loved by all his colleagues at the IRB. A humble, kind person whose wisdom was sought out by all. He will be sorely missed. RIP my friend.

We can't imagine a world without Andy and know that there will be a huge void in our lives. He was cherished and loved by us and our boys, Matthew and Daniel, not just as a friend but as a member of our family. We have so many wonderful memories of times spent at the cottage on Lake Huron, of trips to Blue Jays games and, most of all, of countless joyful gatherings at Marianne, Andy and Nicholas' home where the food was always plentiful and the conversation lively. We were among the first to ride in his beloved Tesla and will never forget the joy on his face when it finally arrived after years of anticipation. Andy's loving care of his mother and parents-in-law revealed the depth of his kindness and compassion to others. But he showed his true strength of character during his illness and will always and forever be a model of courage and resilience for us. We love you, Andy, and we are honoured to have called you our dear friend.
