In Celebration of

Andrew "Andy" Murie

October 13, 1955 -  March 8, 2022

Andrew “Andy” Murie passed away peacefully on March 8 surrounded by his immediate family, three months after being diagnosed with metastatic pancreatic cancer. He was 66.

Although Andy was taken from this world too soon, he made an incredible impact. At the time of his death, he was in his 25th year as the CEO of MADD Canada, working as a tireless advocate for road safety and having saved countless lives. Prior to joining MADD Canada, he worked for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, where he helped improve the lives of members of our communities.

He was a devoted and caring husband and father who did everything he could to give his wife Joan and two children Alex and Stacey the best lives possible. His family loved to travel together, be active together, play games, or laugh at Andy’s latest antics. Andy lived a life without regret and was grateful to have had the opportunity to travel extensively, whether he was hiking to Machu Picchu, scrambling in Greece, scuba diving in Belize, or most recently on safari in Kenya.

Anyone that knew Andy was amazed by his energy, athleticism, and determination. He engaged in many athletic pursuits, including racing (five-time Ironman), biking, snowboarding, scuba diving, swimming, running, playing hockey, snowshoeing, and hiking. He was a member of the Southdown Striders running group for over 25 years, and some of Andy’s dearest friends were fellow Striders. He was also endlessly curious and an avid reader and he could often be found reading a book on the back deck while working on the perfect tan.

Andy was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, and was a lifelong Ti-Cats fan. He and Joan raised their children largely in Mississauga, Ontario but Andy’s happy place was their Collingwood home where he loved the remarkable sunrises over the bay. He made cherished friends at Alpine Ski Club, where he and his family were members for over 20 years, and with their community in “The Surf”.

Andy will be desperately missed by all those that he’s left behind. We are devastated by this loss and our hearts are broken. He was one of a kind and his friends and family know that to be loved by him was so special.

He is survived by his loving wife Joan Ramsay; his two children Alex & Stacey Murie; his siblings Keith (Linda) Murie, Marget (Terry) Towers, Coleen (Al) Skrzek, Wendy (Tom) Augustin, and Fiona Brewer (Gareth Crocker); his in-laws Ruth & Ron Ramsay of Vancouver; his sisters-in-law Laura Ramsay (Stu Aird) and Maureen Ramsay (Angus McIlraith),15 much-loved nieces & nephews and their families, and of course Oakley.

As per his wishes, Andy will be honoured in a Celebration of Life at the Waterside Inn at 15 Stavebank Road South in Mississauga on Saturday, March 19 from 1-5 pm, with remarks at 2:30. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to MADD Canada and continue Andy’s work to stop impaired driving and make our communities safer.
