In Celebration of

Amelia Anna Szulc

May 2, 2013 -  May 25, 2022

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of a beautiful and brave child, Amelia. Amelia Anna Szulc passed away peacefully on May 25th, 2022 at the age of 9, surrounded by family. Amelia is survived by her parents Eric and Nancy Szulc, her sister Natalie, her paternal grandparents, Julian and Kazimiera Szulc and her maternal grandparents, Samuel and Anahid Hanna. She will be greatly missed by her loving cousins, aunts, uncles and friends.

Amelia was born in Toronto, Ontario on May 2nd, 2013 and was the youngest of two daughters. At the age of two, Amelia was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Little did cancer know the battle that it was in store for during the next seven years. Amelia was a fireball of a young girl who fought her cancer with steadfast determination, treatment after treatment. Her hundreds upon hundreds of bravery beads are evidence of that courage. Amelia was very well-known to all of her doctors and nurses for her sassiness and tough attitude. It is hard to imagine anyone who met Amelia that wasn’t positively impacted by her personality and strength.

Although much of Amelia’s childhood was spent undergoing treatments, her friends and family were blessed to share many special moments with her. “Amelia Bedelia” loved all things squishy, sparkly and bright but at the same time, enjoyed watching scary movies. She made many lasting memories at the cottage where she loved spending time with family. Her days at the cottage were filled with chasing after toads, going for rides in the boat, tubing with her cousins, kayaking, swimming, playing on the lilypad and floating around on a giant unicorn. In the evenings, she loved eating s’mores by the firepit, watching the stars and hoping to catch a glimpse of the Space Station flying overhead. She relished her chances to attend school in-person and spend time with her many friends and teachers. Her love of school developed her love of books and Amelia could be found reading everywhere and anywhere, including on a boat flying down the lake. Another favourite pastime for Amelia was to play Roblox, where she could chat and play endlessly with her cousins and friends no matter where she was for treatment. Amelia also enjoyed arts and crafts, where she made countless bracelets and slime and was fortunate to spend her ninth birthday party surrounded by friends and family, creating amazing paintings.

The entire family is thankful to the many friends and family who helped fill Amelia’s life with love and compassion. A heartfelt gratitude to the many doctors, nurses, social workers, donors and volunteers who went above and beyond in their efforts to defeat Amelia’s cancer. A very special thank you to Sick Kids Hospital, in particular the Orange and Blue pods, the 8th floor team and the PACT team. The family would also like to thank other organizations that supported Amelia’s battle, including Campfire Circle (formerly Camp Ooch), the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the National Institute of Health (Maryland). It is through the tireless efforts of doctors, nurses and charities that the fight continues to create a world where no kids are robbed of their childhood, no siblings lose their best friend, and no parents have to bury their babies.

Friends and family will be received at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. West on May 31st, 2022 from 5:00p.m. to 9:00p.m. A religious service will be held at St. Casimir’s Church, located at 156 Roncesvalles Ave. on June 1st, 2022 at 10:00a.m. with a burial service to follow at Park Lawn Cemetery. In honour of Amelia’s love of bright colours, particularly purple, the family asks that those attending the services wear purple or pink clothing and/or items that reflect Amelia’s joy and happiness.

In lieu of flowers, Amelia’s family asks that guests consider donating to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, where a tribute gift can be made in memory of Amelia Szulc.

Think of your child, then, not as dead, but as living; not as a flower that has withered, but as one that is transplanted, and touched by a Divine hand, is blooming in richer colors and sweeter shades than those of earth. – Richard Hooker
