In Celebration of

Alfreda Danilko

November 10, 1926 -  May 13, 2025

Alfreda, at the age of 98 passed on May 13, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Toronto.

Beloved wife of the late Waclaw Danilko for 50 years. Daughter of the late Albin and Emilia Krzywosz, daughter-in-law of the late Antoni and Bronislawa Danilko. Dear sister of the late Laura Krzywosz and Wanda Okowita and her brothers-in-law Roman Okowita, and Boleslaw Danilko and sisters-in-law Weronika Banel and Czeslawa Danilko. She was preceded in death by her daughters Teresa and Jeannette, son Kazmer and his wife Carol. Alfreda is survived by her son-in-law Blake Winchester, daughters Irene and husband Larry Mochenko, Ewa (Lucy) and her husband Ian Cameron, and Jean and her husband Richard Jeffrey, father to Nicholas (Jacy), grandfather to Abigale. Devoted and loving grandmother of Cindy, Tracy and her husband Santini Gale, Holly, Steven (Danielle), David (Sarah) and Emilia. Proud and loving great grandmother to Bryce, Tessa, Kaylynn, and Raiden.

Alfreda and Waclaw emigrated from Poland (Kumiala), where they were subsistence farmers on March 16, 1959 with their children Jeannette (aged 5), Kazmer (aged 3) and Irene (aged 2 months) via Copenhagen, London and New York, and achieved Landed Immigrant status In Toronto (Malton) on April 9, 1959. The family quickly expanded with Ewa and Jean, born in 1960 and 1961. As an early two income family, Alfreda and Waclaw purchased their first home in Toronto’s polish neighbourhood in 1962 a short walk to St. Casimir’s Church and maintained residence in that neighbourhood in their second home. Alfreda and Waclaw relished in the times they spent at the cottage they built in the beautiful area of Tiny Beaches, including wonderful summers with Cindy, Tracy and Holly. Alfreda worked as a waitress and then in a paper mill in Toronto until her early 60’s.

Alfreda was a very devout Catholic and held strong her religious and cultural traditions throughout her life. In that vein, she was a consummate host celebrating family and religious events. She loved to bake and pickle. Her dill pickles were the best. Never learning to drive, despite Waclaw’s attempts, she enjoyed long and animated phone calls with her sisters Laura and Wanda. She gardened with a passion, well into her 90’s, always maintaining an immaculate garden and lawn. She was a staunch environmentalist, creatively and practically repurposing everything imaginable. She enjoyed living in a neighbourhood full of wonderful people of all ages and she cherished her connections with many. An engineer and medical professional at heart, she could problem solve and gerrymander anything, and all close to her benefitted from her healing touch and old world holistic methods. She loved to play with her grandchildren and was a cat, bird and more recently dog whisperer. All who knew her will remember her bright smile, playfulness, infectious laughter and the love of her family.

The family wishes to acknowledge the care Alfreda received from many individuals over the years, including her neighbours, many home care providers, family doctor and the St. Joseph Hospital team. Thank you everyone for your support and kindness.

Visitation will be held at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, on Sunday, May 18, 2025 from 4 to 8 p.m., with rosary prayers at 4pm. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Casimir’s Church, 156 Roncesvalles Avenue, Toronto, on Tuesday, May 20, 2025 at 10am. Interment will follow at Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto.

In memory of Alfreda, donations may be made to Diabetes Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

I never met your Mother, but if her children are any measure, she must have been a remarkable woman.

Alfreda was very special to all of us. Our little dog, Spike was a big fan and always very happy to see her sitting on her front porch. He knew she’d bounce his ball for him and would immediately go right to her. They had many play sessions and hearing her laughter when they’d play was such a joy.
Alfreda was always taking care of her garden even on the hottest summer days. She’d tell me that she “needed to keep moving”. She took such pride in her home. We’re going to miss dear, Alfreda. She’ll never be forgotten.
So much love and our deepest condolences to her family and friends.
