In Celebration of

Alexander Kretchman

October 1, 1927 -  November 7, 2023

Alex was born in 1927 in Melville, Saskatchewan and came to Toronto with his family as a young teenager. He died peacefully at home at the age of 96 on November 7, 2023. He was predeceased by his wife Lily (née Fogel), his sister Freda, and his brothers Erwin and Sonny.

Alex was a natural teacher. He began his career in Sault Ste. Marie and spent most of it teaching at St. George’s Junior Public School in Etobicoke.

He made the most of his summers, building a cabin on Kawagama Lake in Haliburton with the help of family and friends, and maintaining and improving it year after year. His daughters and grandchildren are very thankful for the opportunity to spend much of their childhood exploring there.

Alex was a very involved, loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was compassionate and calm, had a great sense of humour, and went out of his way to make everyone he met feel welcome. He was always ready to pitch in and help with a job or play a game of cards. He will be missed by many, many people, including his brother Ron and sister-in-law Marleene, sisters-in-law Anne and Lucinda, daughters Janice and Julie, and grandchildren Ian, Mark, and Heather Greig.

A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 9 at St. Philip’s Lutheran Church, 61 West Deane Park Drive, Etobicoke.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Philip's Lutheran Church (stphilipstoronto.com) or to Moorelands Camp (moorelands.ca) would be greatly appreciated.

Having met Alex on a number of occasions, included at a dinner Janice held at her home, I always found Alex to be a kind, gentle and welcoming soul. May he rest in peace and rise in glory. The prayers of my congregation at St. John's (Dixie) Anglican Church are with Janice, Julie and all the family as you mourn Alex. Our children send Janice a special hug.

Always a smile and glint in his eye, it was always a pleasure spending time visiting with Janice and Mr. Kretchman. He lived a long full life and his memories will live on with us who cherish the time we had with him.

"Mr. Kretchman" as he was known to us kids on the Bay at Kawagama Lake was one special man. So many of my own memories involved fun, creative times down the path at their cottage. He always had an ear to listen, patience beyond and seemed genuinely interested in what a young person might have to say. He and Lily would dream up crafts, dress up parties and all kinds of entertainment for us bunch. My sincerest sympathies to Janice, Julie and Julie's children.
