In Celebration of

Alexander Bain

June 24, 1948 -  December 28, 2016

Alex passed away peacefully at home in Toronto on December 28th 2016 of heart failure. Alex was the son of the late Madeleine and James Bain, caring and supportive husband of Janet Rossant and loving father to Robert and Jennifer (deceased). He will be sorely missed by his siblings, James (Megan), Peggy (Arndt) and Peter (Leigh), his nieces, nephews and the extended Armour clan.

Alex studied Math and Physics at the University of Toronto, followed by postgraduate studies at UBC and the University of Cambridge, where he developed his career-long research interest in the theory of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. He taught for many years in the Chemistry Department at McMaster University, where he was a respected colleague and supportive mentor to many aspiring students and junior faculty.

Family and friends are invited to gather at the Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto on Friday January 6th, 2017 from 10 a.m., followed by a Service of Remembrance at 11 a.m. Online memorial messages and donations to SickKids or Holland Bloorview Kids Rehab can be made at www.turnerporter.ca

At every SickKids event Alex was the person I always gravitated to for entertaining conversation and endless cheerfulness

Alex was the NMR expert among the faculty at McMaster when I joined the Department in 1989 as an Assistant Professor, fresh from a Postdoc in the areas of NMR and Polymers. He asked the most poignant questions during my interview, always in a very collegial way, and this helped make me want to join the Department. Alex was always generous with his time and advice to junior faculty, and students, and we have lost a good friend and colleague in him.

Dear Janet:
I'm so sorry to hear the news of the loss of Alex and have made a donation to SickKids in his memory. I wish I could attend the funeral but will be out of the country.
With regrets and sadness, James
