In Celebration of

Albert "Al" Joseph Gillies

July 2, 1933 -  November 22, 2018

After a short but valiant fight at the age of 85, Albert passed away peacefully with his family by his side. A devoted and cherished family man he leaves behind his truest love, devoted wife Jean of 58 years. Their story defines mutual respect and love. Deeply loved and truly respected father of Ken (Kim), Judy (David) O’Connor, Doug (late Colleen), Donna (Alain) Theroux. Proud and adored Papa of Sean, Brad, Noah, Seth, Jonah, Jessica, Megan, and Mathew. Dear brother of the late Jack (Bev), and Margaret Gillies.

Born and raised in Verdun, Quebec he faced challenges in his early life. Through these, he grew into a man who embodied strength, will, and determination, accepting nothing less than success through hard work and determination. A graduate from McGill University he received a B.A.SC. in electrical engineering and an MBA leading to a 42-year career with CN Rail. Throughout this time, he proudly held different positions retiring as Vice President of Intermodal operations. Throughout his life, Al had many passions all which gave him great pleasure. An avid sports fan, reader and animal lover, his greatest passions were his sense of home, family and the bond of special friends he cherished. Although he was never a man of many words, his quiet generosity, and pride in those he held close were tangible. Possessing a sense of humor that was dry and witty, his laughter and smile will never be forgotten.

Please feel welcome to join his family as they celebrate his life, their love and say a final farewell to an amazing man. Deeply spiritual he now and has always been embraced and comforted by his unfaltering faith.

I worked for Al in Mississauga many years ago. He was a knowledgeable leader who inspired confidence in his troops. A gentleman who could always be counted on to provide just the correct amount insight to break administrative log jams. It was a pleasure to work with him.
He leaves a wealth of positive relationships and fond memories. May similar memories provide strength to his family at this difficult time.

Steph and I would like to extend our condolences to the Gillies family during this difficult time. Ken, Kim, Sean and Brad, all tremendous friends and great supporters of our very tight knit lacrosse community. We will all be here for you when you need us.

Al and I developed a close friendship during our four years as class mates at Catholic High. We later played football and basketball together. Last met Al at his brother Jack’s funeral in Montreal.
Al was a respected friend, my condolences to the family.
