In Celebration of

Yvonne Marie McMeekin (nee Giles)

March 24, 1925 -  May 18, 2017

Passed away peacefully, in her 93rd year, on May 18, 2017 after a short illness. “Babe” was predeceased by her beloved husband of 58 years John Henderson, parents Lillian Wills (E. Gordon Wills) and Wilfrid Giles, parents-in-law Elizabeth and William McMeekin, sister and brother-in-law Ruth and Ralph Scott, brother Murray Giles and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Joyce McMeekin. She is survived by her sons Robert Hugh (Mary) and John Bruce (Allison), grandchildren Wesley, Hayley, Adrienne, Ceilidh and John (“Jack”), nieces and nephews Helen, Virginia, Jane (Densmore), David and Susan (Traugott) Scott and Kemp, Blair, Keith and Scott McMeekin and their families. Born and raised in Toronto’s west end, Babe was a child of the depression, the family circumstances not permitting her to finish high school. Like so many of her generation, her life was transformed by the war. As a teenager, one of her first jobs was assembling Bren guns at the John Inglis factory in Toronto. On her off time she volunteered in service canteens. She met John at a YMCA dance before he was sent overseas. Undeterred by her engagement to another, John pursued Babe in a great love letter campaign. They must have been good for ultimately she accepted his proposal and the partnership commenced. After the war, Babe continued her work life with a stint in banking, particularly enjoying the foreign exchange desk with the Bank of Commerce. Once a mother, she left the workplace to care for her family. Family is what came to define her life, a generous and caring mother, aunt, grandmother and friend to all. We will miss her dearly. Our thanks to the staff of The Grenadier (Supported Living) and West Park LTC for Babe’s great care over the past many years. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Monday, May 29, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Kingsway Lambton United Church, 85 the Kingsway, Etobicoke, ON. Donations in Babe’s memory may be made to the West Park Foundation. On line condolences may be made through www.turnerporter.ca
