In Celebration of

William Douglas "Doug" Brown

June 23, 1925 -  September 25, 2017

Peacefully passed away at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on Monday September 25, 2017. Brother to Dorothy McClean and uncle to Roy and John McClean, and Brenda Talbot (McClean). Cousin to Viola McLean (Branton) and Dwight Branton. Doug, with his wit and sense of humour, will be fondly missed by many extended family and friends. Born in Niagara Falls, Doug moved at a young age with his family to North Toronto where he grew up. Doug never married but lived an active life, making many friends pursuing his many interests and associations. Doug became known and appreciated for his immense knowledge of many subjects, particularly history, geography and architecture. His interest in architecture led him to the William Morris Society where he became an active member and was editor of their newsletter for a number of years. His interest in the Arts and Crafts movement led him to use his writing and photography skills in the writing and publishing of a book about the architect Eden Smith, well known designer of many buildings in Toronto. During his retirement years he continued to enjoy giving lectures on and guiding walking tours of his favourite Toronto neighbourhoods. Doug loved the out-of-doors, cottaged in Muskoka for some years and canoed extensively around Ontario. During younger years he hiked in the Adirondacks and became a founding member of the Bruce Trail Association where he continued to hike with his many friends into his eighty's. Throughout his life he supported movements aimed at the preservation of the planet including The David Suzuki Foundation and Ecojustice Canada. During his retirement Doug enjoyed monthly Pub Nights with friends and colleagues.

As per his wishes cremation has taken place and a gathering in celebration of Doug’s life will be held on October 22, 2017 (see Funeral Details).

Donations may be made to The Bruce Trail Association, The Heart & Stroke Foundation of the Canadian Cancer Society.

I am so sorry to hear of Doug's passing. He was truly a delightful gentleman, who was a big part of my, and my family's life. One of Doug's closet friends... since the 1960's... is my father Frederick Turner. They were there together at the beginning of the Bruce Trail. They were there together through the William Morris Society, Eden Smith and mutual interests too numerous to mention. My mom was Isabelle Turner, also a close friend of Doug's. My father will be terribly upset to hear.
Please do keep me advised of any memorial service for Doug... myself, my father and other members of our family would very much like to pay our respects.

Our condolences to the family.

Jim Turner

My family including wife, Arlene, and children, Jason McClean and Emma & Marshall Bush, are very saddened.

I am very proud to call Doug Brown my uncle. I am also proud to know that Uncle Doug brought positive contributions to organizations he was so passionate about including the Bruce Trail Society.

It brings us great relief to know he passed peacefully.

Rest In Peace W. Douglas Brown.
