In Celebration of

Wanda Lilane Bannister

Wanda passed away peacefully on September 25, 2023 at 88 years of age. She was born in Canaan, New Brunswick to Hollie and Nettie Northrup.

Wanda grew up in New Brunswick but then followed her siblings and her then fiancée, Carl Bannister, to Toronto, Ontario when she was only 18 years old. Carl and Wanda were married on October 6, 1956 and would have celebrated their 67 wedding anniversary this year. They built a life in Toronto and lived in the same house for almost 58 years until they moved in with their son, Colin, and his family in 2020. They also attended Long Branch Baptist Church throughout this time. It was here that they served the Lord together. Wanda served in the kitchen, hosted caring groups in their home and led in the girl’s program, Pioneer Girls. She also headed up the nursery for decades and it was here that she was affectionately called Auntie Wanda by so many. It was Wanda’s selfless servant heart and smile that so many fondly remember.

Wanda loved to bake goodies for her family, friends, and church gatherings. The corner of the kitchen always had a plethora of her favourites including her famous cinnamon bread, lemon bread and lemon squares. She also had a love of gardening that was passed down to her from her mother. She loved to go out each morning to tend to her roses, clematis, lupin and her always blooming Star of Bethlehem.

Wanda loved the Lord and was an example of what it meant to serve the Lord faithfully. Although she is no longer with us we are thankful that her journey on this earth is over and that she is now home with her Lord and Saviour.

She is survived by her husband Carl, daughter, Shona (John) Wright, son, Colin (Libby) Bannister, grandchildren Cailie (Immanual) Archer, Nathan Wright, Luke Wright, Conor Bannister and sister Sandra (Sam) Mahshie. She will also be missed by brother-in-law, Gerald Sleep and sisters-in-law, Joan Northrup and Doris Northrup and many, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her siblings Winnifred Sleep, Therle Northrup, Galen Northrup, Linton Northrup and her parents Hollie and Nettie Northrup.

Wanda was a shining example of what it meant to be a godly Christian woman. Her kindness, caring ways, gentle words of encouragement, and soft laughter will be missed by so many. Our condolences to Carl and the family at her loss. What a blessing to know that Wanda is now in the presence of her Lord and Saviour, and awaits a reunion one day with all of us who follow Jesus Christ. God bless! ~Gayle and Steve
