In Celebration of

Walter R. Stevenson

November 27, 1941 -  September 7, 2021

Passed away tragically and suddenly on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at the age of 79.

The most loving father, he will be forever and deeply missed by Catherine (Steve), Kimberly (Jeff) and Matthew. Much loved grandfather of Chris, Cole, Stella, Nikki, and Madison. Survived by the mother of his children, Margaret. Lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews, Wally was the best big brother to his surviving sibling, “Bullit” Bob. After a distinguished career in Law as Senior Partner at McLean & Kerr, Wally will be greatly missed by his many respected colleagues and dear friends.

We invite you to spend some time looking around this memorial site we created for our Dad Wally, reading his Biography, Life stories, poems dedicated to him, pictures, some of his favourite songs and more. If you have any of your own favourite memories or photos you'd like to share here, please do. We are devastated and will miss him and keep him in our hearts forever.

Wally was loved by all who knew him. Born in St. Catharines and raised in Port Dalhousie, he maintained a lifelong love of the water and often took his kids back to his see his childhood home and his humble beginnings. He loved the Henley Regatta, and served as Co-Commodore of the Mississauga Canoe Club in the 1990’s. Wally loved his backyard swimming pools, relaxing poolside at his condo in Florida in Fort Myers, family RV trips to Myrtle Beach and then visiting Goderich at his trailer on Lake Huron in recent years.

A gentle, kind and loving man, Wally instilled strong values in his children. A proud grandfather, Wally adored spending time with his grandchildren and “watching them unfold like blossoms”.

Wally was a proud Alumnus of The University of Western Ontario, now known as Western U, earning an undergraduate degree in History, followed by his LLB at U of T Law School. His firstborn, Catherine Leslie, came along before he graduated law school and he always told her she was his and Margie's "lovechild". A few years later, after Wally established his Law career at the firm, Kimberly and Matthew came along in quick succession. Being only 18 months apart, they were often mistaken for twins.

Each of his children was immensely proud of their Dad and his career. A memorable highlight was the endowment of the Walter R. Stevenson student bursary at U of T Law School by businessman and philanthropist Gallant Ho. The award is granted to a law student demonstrating significant "perseverance and determination", qualities which Wally personified throughout his life.

He had a strength of character and tenacity of will true to his Scottish roots. Like the solitary bagpiper, he managed his pain with quiet strength and grace until it became too much to bear.

Words cannot express the depth of our sorrow.

A private family cremation has taken place, with a public celebration of life to be held at a later date.
If desired, donations may be made to The Chronic Pain Association of Canada (https://chronicpaincanada.com) or to Pain BC (PainBC.ca).

I was truly saddened to hear of Wally's passing. Wally hired me as an associate lawyer at McLean & Kerr LLP in 1995 and was my mentor. I learned a lot from Wally and have many fond memories of working with him at the firm for 23 years.. He was a very important person in my life and I will never forget him. My sincere condolences to you, his family, on your loss. Todd

Death is Nothing at All (Selected by Wally)

Entered September 15, 2021 from Found among Dad's files/papers

Death is nothing at all. It does not count. I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened. Everything remains exactly as it was. I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged.

Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by the old familiar name. Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together.

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity.

What is this death but a negligible accident? Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner.

All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

Dad's cars

Entered September 15, 2021 from Matt Stevenson

Dad was a huge fan of GM Muscle Cars. Over the years he owned and enjoyed an Olds Cutlass, several V8 Cadillacs, a Trans Am, two Camaros, and culminating in a British Racing Green 6-speed Corvette convertible, which he described as "far and away the best car I've ever owned."

He used to upgrade the mufflers on the various sportscars he owned, choosing something with a slightly louder than average low growl. He always like the specialty fat tires and fancy rims too. Cathy sure had some nice rides going to high school!

At one point he also owned a boat, berthed at Toronto Harbour, and named the "Vigilant H.D.", after his beloved Collie dog, Piper.

Photo Opportunity

Entered September 16, 2021

Whether it was a family Christmas, MCC Regatta, or family vacation, Dad was the one with the camera. He made sure we posed for endless photo opportunities! Sometimes however, he was at the other end of the lens....he was known to have high quality cameras complete with a set of lenses, like the telephoto lens best suited for capturing the paddlers during their races. A Poem for My Father (Khalil Gibran - The Prophet)

Entered September 16, 2021 from Cathy Carr

Although he could be strict, Dad was the tenderest father. His love for his children was unequivocal. He could be quietly sentimental, and philosophical, qualities that I deeply treasured in him and relate to.

30 years ago, in 1991, Dad gave me (Cathy) the gift of a book for Christmas: The Prophet, by Kahlil Gibran. Inscribed with a dedication to me in his writing, this book exemplifies the bond that existed between us. Sometimes the bond went unspoken, but I know I told my dad that I loved him many times in his last weeks and months. Even up to his last day. I hope he heard me.

Here is a selection from the chapter On Love:

"Then said Almitra, Speak to us of Love.
And he raised his head and looked upon the people, and there fell a stillness upon them. And with a great voice he said:
When love beckons to you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth, so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun, So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth."

Being your daughter was like swimming in an ocean of love Dad. I will carry you with me in my heart forever.

Lakeside Park, Port Dalhousie, Ontario

Entered September 16, 2021 from Cathy Carr

My Dad loved this painting. I believe it was a gift from his dear friend John Watson. What he loved about this painting is that it is a scene right out of his childhood home in Port Dalhousie, Ontario. He and his siblings would often spend summer days at the lake, swimming, rowing, having carefree summer fun, like the kids in this scene. In fact, he even thought the 3 kids in this picture may well have ACTUALLY been him, his brother Bob and sister Judy. Perhaps the painter used an old snapshot of Port as inspiration for this painting? That just might be the actual Stevenson kids about to hop on the streetcar.....it most definitely does look like them!
