In Celebration of

Virginia “Jeannie” (nee Breden) Ittig

October 30, 1923 -  July 4, 2025

With deep love and gratitude for a life beautifully lived, Virginia “Jeannie” Ittig passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones on July 4th, 2025 in Mississauga at the remarkable age of 101.

Born on October 30, 1923 in Manhattan, Jeannie was a proud New Yorker throughout her life.

She was the first woman in her family to graduate high school in 1941 and in 1942, Jeannie married her beloved Pete, with whom she created a beautiful family and life.

In 1960, the family emigrated to Canada where Jeannie worked for the Toronto Public Library until her retirement in 1985. She was an enthusiastic lover of animals, books, public libraries, and duplicate bridge.

Faith was at the core of her life. Having converted to Catholicism as a teenager, Jeannie was a devoted member of St. Dominic’s Church in Mississauga for over 5 decades. She also had a special place in her heart for St. Francis of Assisi, whose love of animals mirrored her own and her home was always shared with cherished pets of all sorts.

Family was always at the very centre of Jeannie’s world. She shared deep, enduring bonds with her siblings, nieces, and nephews and was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother. Jeannie will be deeply missed by her children and their spouses Peter (Mary), Gerard (Judith), and Virginia (Reinhold), her grandchildren Maureen (Luke), Erik (Chelsea), and Laurel, and great-grandchildren Oak, Juniper, and Rowan; Nigel and Charlotte.

Jeannie was predeceased by her parents, Lillian and Henry Breden, siblings Mae, Grace, Leslie, Adelbert, and Calvin; and by two husbands, Peter Ittig and Mieczyslaw Berezanski.

Fiercely independent, Jeannie resided at Chartwell’s Robert Speck residence for the last 9 years of her life where she nurtured happy relationships with residents and staff alike.

Hers was truly a life well-lived and her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to those she loved will be remembered always.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to your local public library or animal welfare charity, in memory of Jeannie’s lifelong passions.

My Aunt Jeannie. The last of the original 7 Breden’s. While it breaks my heart that I will not see her again in this life, reading this tribute to her life made me smile. She was always happy to hear my voice and to see my Breden face. The longer I live there are fewer and fewer humans who light up when they see me. That is hard to take. Rest peacefully Aunt Jeannie. I can only hope you and Uncle Pete had a glorious reunion of eternal love.

Virginia, I have lovely memories of your mom from all those visits to your house when we were kids. She was so elegant! She was from New York! She smoked! A generous, kind woman and, from looking at her picture, she simply refused to age. Condolences to you and your family.

A Wonderful Woman. Kind to everyone. Les and Gertrude Breden enjoyed hours of reminiscing while visiting. She will be forever in my heart.
