Tom Thomas, 87, of Toronto, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026.
Born on October 15, 1938, Tom was the beloved son of the late Camila and Fayette William Thomas, and a caring older brother to Faye. He was a devoted and much-loved uncle to Karen, Brenda, and John, holding a special and enduring place in their hearts and lives.
Tom lived a rich and meaningful life, touching the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Generous, gregarious, and warmly spirited, he was known for his lively presence and remarkable sense of humor. He delighted in sharing conversation and laughter, travel, enjoying fine meals and wine, and telling stories. Above all, he was deeply kind and generous, always giving of himself to others.
His path to teaching was not a straight one, but it was one he embraced wholeheartedly. After leaving the seminary, Tom discovered his calling in the classroom. He began as a supply teacher with the Toronto Catholic School Board, later teaching at the high school level at Camp Borden, and continuing onto the Toronto Public School Board. He taught at Etobicoke Collegiate Institute and Burnhamthorpe Collegiate, and spent a meaningful period at the Metro West Detention Centre.
Tom eventually returned to Burnhamthorpe Collegiate, where he found deep purpose in teaching adult re-entry students. He cared deeply for his students and took pride in helping them find their way forward. Teaching was more than a profession to him—it was a calling, and one he found difficult to leave behind.
Tom is lovingly remembered by his sister Faye Murphy (Brendon); his nieces and nephew, Karen (Steve), Brenda, and John (Kasia); and his great-nephews and niece, Terrence, Tomas, Olivia, and Lukas. He will also be dearly missed by his extended family and many close friends.
Tom’s legacy is one of kindness, laughter, and a genuine love for others. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
