In Celebration of

Thomas (Tom) William Hodgson

June 7, 1989 -  September 2, 2021

Tom passed away suddenly but peacefully in his sleep at the age of 32, in Toronto, Ontario.
His people came from manor homes in England, sea captains in Newfoundland, and the farmlands of Lithuania; a legacy which gave Tommy a wonderful sense of humour, natural warmth, and the ability to put others at ease. His people became everyone he met, from around the globe. He was ever-present to whomever he was with; happiest when he could make a difference in someone’s life. From scheduling shifts to help his staff, or being Best Man standing up to his quiet fears for delivering exactly what was needed. Tom valued loyalty and kindness. He attracted friends from the time he was a Chickadee at the Ashgrove Jr Y, through Hillside Middle School. After finishing high school at Clarkson Secondary, he went on to Humber in Hospitality Management. Family dinners offered Nana’s Newfoundland savoury dressing, Oma’s potato kugelis, sometimes Jamaican hot sauce, and always laughter. The indelible connection of love baked into food may have led him to the restaurant business. Beginning as a dishwasher at Lucy’s, Tom worked his way up to sous-chef and chef, most recently at the Bloor West institution, Shakey’s. A gifted musician, Tom was music! He loved to dance. He could pick up any instrument and bring it to life. Drums and guitars were integral to his existence, and his depth was mined for a growing body of work in electronic composition. Often people were surprised by Tom’s accomplishments because he seldom placed them front and centre. He felt they were what he owed Life but we will remember his many talents, his compassion, and his positive outlook; for being so many things to so many people. After his sister’s death in 2015, Tom took on responsibility for his parent’s healing. Tommy has gone to join his sister, Kristy, and her partner, Nick, as well as his beloved grandparents. He is survived and lovingly remembered by his parents, John Hodgson, and Renata Simkus, his aunts, uncles, and cousins. And his people.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's memory can be made to ErinoakKids Centre for Treatment and Development, VIBE ARTS for Children and Youth or a charity close to your heart.

From skateboarding at the “skate plex” to West 49 (327 forever!), to Alice Fazooli’s and finally being neighbours again, I was fortunate to know you many all stages of life.

I’ll never forget your laughter, kindness, and a willingness to always keep in touch.

Rest in paradise my friend, until we meet again.

Tommy was truly one of a kind. I first met him at Ashgrove (Elementary School). He was so full of life and energy. You couldn’t help but be drawn to people who are so happy all the time. He was always running around excited to try new things and play sports. That energy never left him. In middle school he loved playing the drums. He had a blast when we played Hawaii 5-0 at our school concert. He loved making people laugh and kicking butt in football. High school was very similar for him. People could see his personality, how kind and funny and outgoing he was. He made friends so easily and many loved him and still do to this day. I’m proud to have known him for so many years. I miss the days where we would all hang out at my house or talk about the most random things on the phone and laugh. His parents are wonderful people and have always been so kind to me. I want to give my condolences to them and let them know that they raised two beautiful kids who both loved them very much. I am so sad that Tommy has passed but I am so glad he gets to be reunited with Kristy. He loved her with all of his heart. I know they will be looking after each another as they always did and will be watching over their parents with love. May they both Rest In Peace.

Tommy's sister Kristy was my childhood best friend; we grew up around the block from each other and we became best friends when we were in the same class in grade two. At this time I met Tommy, who was a year old at the time. I will always remember him first as an adorable little boy with blonde hair and an infectious smile, and later as a wonderful man with a kind heart and gentle soul. Kristy was always so proud of him and couldn't have asked for a better brother. They were always so loving and supportive of each other. I am deeply saddened by Tommy's loss but I will always remember him fondly. I hope he is at peace and has been reunited with Kristy and Nick.
