Thomas Scanlan
Devoted father of Gerald, Sheila Hishon (nee Scanlan), Sean and Kevin; Father-in-law to Doug (Hishon), Linda (Andersen), Brenda (nee McCann) and Karen (nee Granat); grandfather to Lee, Ben, Audrey, Jesse, Matt, Jessica, Erin, Kayla and Jack; great grandfather to Joshua, Jordan and Claire Boushy; brother to Maureen Austin; son of Jeremiah and Mary and loving husband of Rita Ann (nee McMullen) predeceased, passed away peacefully at Coleman Care Center Barrie on July 5th, 2012. Born in Dublin, Ireland on November 14, 1923. Tom was raised on the family farm in Gaile Tipperary, graduated from the local Agricultural College, served in the Irish Reserves during the Second World War and made his way to Canada in 1947. In Canada he started his career cleaning horse blankets at the Hudson Bay Company before getting his chance in marketing and advertising at Tool and Hand and never looked back. He finished his career as President of Continental Public Relations and CEO of Balmoral Advertising (subsidiaries of Foster Advertising). After retiring, he started his own consulting business (Gaile Services) which he ran with Rita for the next ten years. He was a gifted communicator and mentor to dozens of young people making their way through the advertising and public relations business, and will be remembered fondly by all whose lives he touched. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter 'Yorke' Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., Toronto (at Windermere Ave., east of Jane subway) on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. and on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Nativity of Our Lord Roman Catholic Church, 480 Rathburn Rd., Toronto on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
