Thomas Joseph Polanic

April 2, 1943 -  September 22, 2019

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Joseph Polanic.

Tom passed away with great strength and courage on Sunday September 22, 2019. Left to mourn his loss are his loving wife Carol and his devoted daughter Katie.

Tom was born on April 2, 1943 in Toronto. He was predeceased by his infant son Michael and his parents Joseph and Mary Polanic. Tom will be sadly missed by his Aunt Carrie Sohujko, Polanic and Barlow cousins, Seiffert in-laws and many lifelong friends.

Tom was a proud alumnus of St. Michael’s College School and the University of Michigan. He was a gifted athlete and excelled at any sport he pursued. His hockey prowess took him to play in the Junior A, AHL, NHL and Senior A leagues.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane Subway, on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service to take place in the Chapel on Friday, September 27, 2019 at 11 a.m.

For those who wish, kindly consider a donation to the Hospital for Sick Children or a charity of your choice.

Dear Carol and Katie,
We have just learned of Tom's passing and feel so sad for you both. Please accept our most sincere condolences. We hope to see you on Thursday afternoon for a brief visit. Ken isn't very well these days, so we think this is the best time for us to come. Earle may come with us. We think of you both with deep affection. We will always remember Tom for his courage in dealing with his infirmities. What patience and determination he displayed as he walked and walked to stay as strong as he could! Tom was a huge force on our Michigan team. I was "only" 5' 11' and Tom, Gordie, Bob and Gary were all huge by comparison. I got to play with Tom at times during my sophomore year and what an honor that was! He was deceptively fast, a brilliant puck handler and had a tremendous shot. It was a thrill a few years later that I was able to watch him play with the Minnesota North Stars.

I seem to remember a playful look on his face and a glint in his eye. He was not a man of many words but he was a force on our team and in the locker room.

All of his former teammates mourn with you, his family and close friends. I hope his life was peaceful and joyful. I hope he felt loved and was able to return that love. I have great memories of a giant of a man! Thanks Tom!

A perfect, very warm and greatly understated Obituary of Tom.
Indeed, he was a great athlete and an exceptional hockey player throughout his career.
But most importantly, I understand that he became an excellent teacher and had a profound impact on many of the students who he came in contact with. To excel in the field of education and teaching is an even greater accomplishment than his many athletic achievements.
My deepest sympathies and prayers go out to Carol and Katie on their difficult loss.
I hope and pray that Tom is in a much better place after he and his ladies have endured so many health challenges in recent years.
I am very sorry that I cannot get to Toronto to pay my due respect.
