In Celebration of

Thelma Hryhor

July 20, 1928 -  April 22, 2020

It is with overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of Thelma Patricia Hryhor. She is predeceased by her husband, Taras (Terry) Hryhor (1928-2020) and daughter Iris Hryhor (1962-1969), and survived by her four daughters, Paula Petrie (Brian), Sandra Hryhor (Roberto), Sheree Hryhor and Ellen Hryhor (Oliver), as well as her three grandchildren, Meagan and Lyndsay Petrie and Alexander Hryhor.

Born in 1928 in Newton, Massachusetts to Victor and Mary MacPhee, Thelma was the second of five children, with siblings Florence, Mary, Anita and Victor (pre-deceased). She grew up in North Lake and Emerald Junction, PEI. After attaining her second class licence, she was a teacher in a one room and later two room school house.

In 1951, with not too much money in her pocket, Thelma moved to Toronto, Ontario, where she would spend the rest of her life. She worked as a Swift Canadian cashier in the cafeteria and also in the credit union.

In the early fifties, Thelma met Terry at a dance, and was immediately smitten with him. They dated on and off, going out dancing and for pie and tea together. On February 14th, 1957, Thelma and Terry were engaged. Every Valentine's Day, from then on, became a celebration of their enduring love.

Thelma and Terry married in August 1957 and celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary together on August 24, 2019. Thelma was a homemaker who would knit, crochet, and sew many of our clothes. She spent lots of time sewing new dresses and worked wonders with various patterns for special occasions. She practiced Hatha Yoga and if you arose early enough, you could find her in various yoga poses including a headstand.

Thelma loved dancing and took lessons to learn step dancing, performing beautifully at the annual family talent show at Spot19, their country retreat in Erin, Ontario, which Terry and Thelma owned for 48 years. On occasion, they could be found at the local Jamboree!

Thelma had the most beautiful smile and a little giggle that we will all remember. She was the most gentle soul and we will miss her angelic spirit as well as her very gracious presence for the rest of our lives. We love you Mom, Grandma, Thelma. May you now join our Dad, Dido, Terry, and our precious little Iris, and so many of your other loved ones in heaven.

A private funeral service and interment at Holy Cross Cemetery has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be planned for a future date.

Donations can be made to any charity of your choice. Our gratitude is overflowing for your good wishes and remembrance of our dear and beloved mother.

Dear Nieces and Nephews,
I am deeply sorry for your loses. I have so many fond, fun memories of our get to gethers out west in Nipawin, Edmonton and on Spot 19 and always a sing a long. Terry singing "Those Tasty perogies." Thelma was a great dancer!

Thinking of you, with love. I will never forget the first time I saw Niagara Falls with you and Terry. So grateful to have had this memory with you and my family.

Dear Sandra and family,
My deepest sincere sympathy on your Mother's passing. Losing both your parents in such a short time is an unimaginable grief, I'm so sorry. Sandra I watched you work with superhuman efforts taking such good care of your parents and their well-being, non-stop, what a blessing on earth to behold. May they rest in peace and love.
May all the beautiful memories carry you gently.
Much care,
Kathy

My condolences to you and your family for your loss.

No matter how old we are, it’s never easy to lose a parent, let alone both within a short time of each other.
