The family of Stewart Sutcliffe sadly announces his passing on October 22, 2014. He will be deeply missed by family and a lifetime of friends. Loving husband to Heather, and proud father of Hugh (Jennifer), Kathryn (David), James (Teresa), and Stewart (Eryn). Stu was an engaged and doting “Papa” to his grandchildren Samantha, Madelyn, Sophie, Amelia, Emma, and Ewan. Lovingly remembered by his sisters, JoAnn Madley and Elizabeth Warner, as well as sister-in-law Sheila Broome (John).
Stu was born in Montreal and through his youth excelled as a centre in hockey while attending Loyola College. He then attended and graduated from McGill University. In the summer of 1955 he took a summer job as a busboy at the Hotel Tadoussac in the Saguenay, Quebec. Upon his departure for the summer, his father Stan asked him to look out for the daughter of his good friend, Hugh Macmillan. Stu introduced himself to Heather the next day, and they spent the next 59 years together.
After graduating from McGill and earning his CA designation, Stu began a long and successful career at Clarkson Gordon in Montreal. In 1970 Stu, Heather, and family moved to Ottawa where Stu became the managing partner of Clarkson, Gordon’s Ottawa office. During his 15 years in Ottawa he developed numerous personal and professional relationships in Ottawa’s nascent technology sector and was active in many charitable organizations.
In the mid 1980s, Stu and Heather moved to the Greater Toronto area for new exciting opportunities. They quickly embraced their new life, broadening their already wide circle of friends
Upon retirement in 1997, Stu continued his passion for golf, winters in Florida, vacationing with his children and grandchildren, and travelling with friends. He continued to develop a large and diverse circle of friends, who will remember fondly his enthusiasm and love of life.
A celebration of Stu’s life will be held at the Church of the Merciful Redeemer, 2775 Erin Centre Blvd., Mississauga, Ontario on Monday, November 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. In Stewart’s memory, the family would welcome donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation, or the Scott Mission.
