In Celebration of

Steve Roman Hurej

June 18, 1951 -  November 17, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Steve Hurej at his home on Friday November 17th, 2023 at the age of 72. Steve is survived by his former wife Barbara Adderley, children John Hurej (Ariella) and Stephanie Hurej, stepdaughter Kirsten Cuffie (Craig) and sister Helen Wilkinson (Dave).

Steve was a loving uncle to Daryl Wilkinson (Jenn), Mark Rush (Kerrie), as well as a great uncle to Ashley Rush (James). He is also survived by his many nieces and nephews.

Steve was born in Ottawa, Ontario, and moved to Etobicoke, in the heart of the Ukrainian community, as a child.

Steve was an accomplished audio engineer receiving many awards and accolades. He had a long and successful career, starting at Clare Burt, eventually moving on to start his own business Producers’ Choice.

Steve struggled with a diagnosis of CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) and had been in remission for the past two years due the outstanding care he received at the Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre.

Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West, Toronto, on Tuesday November, 28th from 2-3 p.m. A Chapel Service will commence at 3 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (www.heartandstroke.ca/donate).

Steve was a beautiful person with a kind heart. ♥️
I have fond memories of our many radio production sessions together at 179 John Street., and a memorable trip to Trinidad with Steve and a crew to shoot a TV spot.
When I started my agency he generously offered his boardroom as my first office. When I was considering leasing my own office he said “build it and they will come.” He was right. He believed in me.
Thank you, Steve, for your wisdom and friendship. Rest well, my friend. You will be missed. ❤️

So sad to hear that Steve is no longer with us. I always looked forward to our sessions, Steve was a great director in addition to being a super talented audio engineer, he always managed to get a great performance out of me. We had great chats and laughs. Rest easy my friend.

My deepest sympathies to Barbara and the Family, especially the kids…

I’ve known Steve since he first started as an assistant at Clare Burt. I watched him grow, learn and was one of his first clients who trusted him to record for me, when he began working behind the board. We produced many Radio and TV commercials together over the decades. We had fun, were professional, collaborative creatively, and the respect was mutual.

When Steve ventured to open his own studio, I followed. I knew him before and during both marriages, and the birth of his kids. If there’s one thing I know, Steve was proud of his kids. He also had many clients and announcers who became friends, and he loved them all, even if they didn’t agree on an intellectual or political level.

Steve had shared with me recently that he often went to the airport at night; to a special gate where security knew him. They’d let him drive in to watch the planes… because his father had worked there when he was a kid. He found solace there, when he felt alone.

I’ll miss you Steve, and wish we could have had one more visit. Rest In Peace; your battle is over. Godspeed. 🙏🏻
