In Celebration of

Stephen John Doherty

March 4, 1959 -  September 10, 2025

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Stephen John Doherty on September 10, 2025, at the age of 66. Born on March 4, 1959, Stephen lived each day with intention, compassion, and loyalty to the people and causes that mattered most to him.

For 35 years, Stephen built a distinguished career with CN Rail, where his commitment to excellence for his customers left a lasting mark. Beyond his professional life, he poured his heart into his community whether through Humber Heights, his work with Elections Ontario, or volunteering with friends at the Good Shepherd. He found joy in gathering with “the gang” every first Thursday of the month spreading kindness and good will.

Stephen was known for his warmth, sharp wit, and unwavering devotion to those he loved most. His husband Larry, with whom he shared 38 beautiful years, and their beloved dogs Neffie and Akhen, brought him immeasurable joy. His legacy of hard work, compassion, and humor will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know him.

Perhaps the best way to understand Stephen is in his own words. When asked to describe himself, he spoke of being “a man of intention, intuition, and integrity,” a logistics coordinator by trade, but by heart “a lottery-loving, banana-bread baking, wisdom-seeking soul.” He had a poet’s spirit, a helper’s heart, and a learner’s mind with just enough mischief to play the lottery “for the fun of it.”

Stephen’s curiosity and kindness knew no bounds, and his light will be deeply missed.

Resting at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel (2357 Bloor St West, Toronto), visitation will be held on Monday, September 15 from 5:00-8:00 p.m.

On Tuesday, September 16, a Funeral Mass will be held in Stephen’s honour at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish (3055 Bloor Street West, Etobicoke) at 11:00 a.m. Friends and family are invited to gather for refreshments afterwards at the onsite reception hall.

Steve was just a joy to be around. You could be sure there would be lots of laughs and many good memories to be made. He and Larry would always make you feel welcome and like family whenever in their presence. You will be sadly missed my friend.

Uncle Stephen had a gift for humour and mischief, with a sparkle that could light up any room. Some of my favourite memories are of the witty, dry back-and-forth between him and Mom. He loved Larry deeply and delighted in spoiling his pugs. May he rest in God’s peace, and may Larry be comforted by faith and surrounded with love.
