It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Stefan Hucal, who passed away just shy of his 79th birthday on Friday, February 27, 2026, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He fought with extraordinary strength, resilience, and determination until the very end.
He was a devoted husband to Hafiza Hucal, a proud and loving Tata to Denis (Lindsay) and Vanja, and a deeply cherished grandfather to Emma and Nathan. His grandchildren brought him immense joy and will dearly miss their Dido.
Stefan was born in Prnjavor, Bosnia and Herzegovina, to the late Vasilj and Mihalina Hucal. From a young age, he developed a strong sense of discipline and responsibility. He worked as a construction foreman in Bosnia.
In 1993, he immigrated to Canada with his family in search of a better future. With unwavering determination and a tireless work ethic, he worked multiple jobs to help his family build a new life in Canada. His sacrifices laid the foundation for everything that followed, and his family will forever be grateful for the strength and perseverance he showed during those early years.
Though Stefan was a simple and humble man, he possessed a sharp and inquisitive mind. He was a religious man whose faith guided him throughout his life. He was deeply knowledgeable about world history and geography and could spend hours engaged in thoughtful conversation. While often reserved, he had a sharp, sarcastic sense of humor and loved to joke around.
Stefan found peace and happiness in nature. He could often be found working in his garden, going mushroom picking, apple picking, or fishing. Whatever it was, he simply enjoyed being outdoors. He cherished being at home with his family and friends, and was happiest gathered around the table, sharing meals and time together.
Stefan will be remembered for his incredible strength, his work ethic, his intelligence, his faith, and his humor.
His strength built a life for those he loved, and that legacy will endure for generations.
R.I.P. our Stari, Tata, and Dido.
