Peacefully and surrounded by love, Stanislaw "Gryf" Milczynski passed away on January 26, 2016 in his 98th year. Left to grieve are his beloved wife Basia, children Martha (Hamish), Jack (Candy) and cherished grandchildren Katie, Graeme and Melanie. Born in Poznan, Poland on April 4, 1918, Stan joined the Polish Army in 1937, fought in WWII, later joining the underground and eventually leading his guerrilla Polish Home Army company in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising, all as described in his memoirs "Diary of Lieutenant Gryf 1939-1945". The heroic exploits of these brave men and women fill the pages as a testament to resistance to oppression and occupation. Wounded, captured and tortured by the Gestapo, Stan's bravery was recognized with many awards including the Virtuti Militari, 3 times the Polish Cross of Valour, Gold Cross of Merit and Silver Cross of Merit with Swords. Between 1945 and 1946, Stan was an officer in the Polish Second Corp in Italy. After the war, Stan settled in England and in 1953 emigrated with his young family to Canada to begin a new life working in woodworking and interior design. Stan loved Ontario cottage country, travel and the company of friends and family. Most he loved his kochana Basia, sharing an unmatched devotion to each other for over 25 years. Thanks to the many caregivers that kept Stan comfortable and at home - special thanks to Diana, Paulina, Deirdre, Sandy, Geoffrey, Kerry and Bibi. The family will receive friends between 2-4 pm on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at Turner & Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, near the Jane subway, immediately followed by prayers in the chapel. Private interment. Memorial donations may be made to to St. Joseph's Health Foundation. Online condolences may be made through ww.turnerporter.ca.
