Sheila Jane Treherne, née Robertson, 92, passed away on November 20, 2025. She was born on December 7, 1932 in Montreal to Mildred and Murray Robertson.
Sheila is remembered as an incredibly loving mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, daughter, wife and friend. She was adored by all who met her, and her infectious laugh, genuine warmth and acceptance of all people have left a legacy of love we can all strive to emulate and sustain. Nothing brought her more joy than being with her family.
Trained as a nurse, Sheila soon embraced the role of full time mother before returning to work with Simpsons (The Bay) and later at Break for Play daycare. She loved performing and participated in many productions in Montreal with Lyric Theatre. A devout Anglican, she was an active member of her church and volunteered extensively, most notably supporting those in hospice care.
Her grandchildren were her greatest joy, and spending time crafting with them and taking part in their lives was central to her happiness. She was an avid reader, especially of historical fiction, and she travelled widely throughout Europe, Australia, Fiji, Tahiti, the United States and Canada. If you met Sheila, even in passing, you left with the unmistakable sense that she genuinely cared about you.
Sheila is survived by her children Stephen (Claire), Susan (Bjug) and David (Janice); her grandchildren Emily, Christine, Natalie, Stephanie (Sami), Andrew (Isabel), Catherine and Madeline; and her great grandchild Emile. She was predeceased by her husband Ernie and her sister Elizabeth.
A Celebration of Life will take place at Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel, 2357 Bloor Street West in Toronto, on November 26, with visitation from 2:00 to 3:00 pm, followed by a service and refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Alzheimer Society of Canada.
The family wishes to thank all relatives, friends and caregivers who graciously and lovingly supported Sheila during her final years.
Sheila will be deeply missed, but what a gift it was to have known her. Her memory will live on through our good deeds, our stories and our kindness to others, especially those in need.
