In Celebration of

Sarah Ann Sibay (nee Lambert)

December 26, 1929 -  May 29, 2018

Peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at Toronto General Hospital, Sarah Ann Sibay departed this world in her 88th year. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Thor Matthew Sibay. Cherished mother of Godyne and Denise (Rob). Adored grandmother of Julian, Jonathan, Alexander, Gregory, Matthew, David and Peter. Loving sister of Ruth MacDonald (the late Jim) and Berkeley (Joy). Predeceased by her parents, Franklin and Annie Louise (nee Patterson) and her brothers, Lewis (the late Marion), Daniel (Juanita and the late Clem), Mahlon and her sister, Mary Vanderburg (the late Bill). Also mourned by her many nieces, nephews, circles of friends and those whose lives she touched. Mom broke ground in many ways. Born the year of the great depression, she began her lifelong love of learning from a one room school house in Niagara-on-the-Lake with debating skills honed through vigorous debates around the family kitchen table, through a university education. Her distinguished career as a nurse spanned over 4 decades and ended as Public Health Nurse in Parkdale caring for those in great need. But in all that she did, family, throughout the world, was at the forefront. Mom’s grace, generosity, wit, courage and intelligence (served with music, flowers, books, poetry, crosswords, computer tips, pots of tea, and homemade fruit pies from the family farm and her garden) both guided and enriched the lives of all who knew her. How fortunate we were to have loved and be loved by her. She tackled the world with kindness, curiosity, strong faith and grit – providing a model of how to live and, in the end, how to die. Funeral Service will be held at All Saints Kingsway Anglican Church, 2850 Bloor St. W., Toronto, on Saturday June 2, 2018 at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Interment Sunday, June 3, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Christ Church Anglican Cemetery, 1294 McNab Rd., Niagara-on-the-Lake. If desired, remembrances may be made to Christ Church Anglican, McNab. Please mail donations directly to the address below:

My deepest sympathy to the Sibay family. Sarah was clearly a remarkable woman who brightened the world around her... an inspiration to us all. Godyne, it's clear that you have inherited your mom's rare and wonderful attributes. Our hearts are with you at this difficult time.

I enjoyed knowing Ann through work for many years. She was a pleasure to spend time with and always had a cheerful manner. My thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.

Sincere condolences to Ann's family. I met Ann in the 70's teaching at a downtown Toronto High School and I have never met a lovelier woman - kind, intelligent and wise.
Of late years, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Ann over some lunches connected to the school group. She always spoke so lovingly and proudly of her children and her grandchildren. She will be missed by us all, I know.
