In Celebration of

Samuel Zammit

January 2, 1927 -  May 10, 2021

Sam Michael Joseph Zammit, 94, died peacefully on May 10, 2021 at Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. He was born January 2nd, 1927 in Kalkara, Malta, the 3rd of 7 children from Maria (Mercieca) Zammit and John Zammit.

Education was difficult due to the war but Sam pursued and trained as a hydraulic engineer, electrician, plumber and renovator. He was an all-round handyman. In 1951 he married his sweetheart Lora Jean (Bonnici) Zammit and they had their two elder daughters Odette and Miriam in Malta. They moved to Canada in 1955 and 10 years later had their youngest daughter Joan.

Sam was an avid cottager, a man of all trades. He held an eternal love for his wife, his daughters, his son-in laws, his grandchildren, their partners and his seven great-grandsons. A survivor of war, Sam was 28 when he moved to Canada and 35 when he became a Canadian citizen. He loved his chosen homeland deeply. More than a ‘glass-half-full” attitude, he was always grateful for the glass in the first place! Sam loved to laugh, he would tell a joke as often as he would talk. He loved his McDonald's coffee, Mandarin buffet at Christmas, Chuck’s Roadhouse meals and Square One walks. Most of all he loved his wife Lora whom he dreamed of in his final weeks. Sam’s final words were “Everybody loves me, and I love everyone”

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Lora, his daughter Miriam, his sisters Jean, Carmen and Connie and his brother Joe. He is survived by his daughters Odette (Stephen Robinson) and Joan (Michael Shanahan) his son-in-law Eric Hamilton, his grandchildren Jesse (Fiorella Robinson) Tracy Robinson, Lindsay (Mike Knez), Katie (Parker Dixon), Breanna Shanahan (Kyle Daigle), Aislinn Shanahan, Liam Shanahan and his seven great grandsons, Luke, Sam and Adam Robinson, Nathan and Brennan Knez, Nash and Jack Dixon. He is also survived by his remaining sisters Rita Swiatlowski, Tessie Jackson and sister in-law Tessie Zammit.

Due to Covid restrictions the visitation will be held privately. The pallbearers will be the small amount of family permitted to attend the funeral. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Cancer Society of Canada in his name.

I’ll cherish every minute I had with Nanu, he was a wonderful grandfather and loved his family dearly. I’ll remember the smile he wore on Christmas Day because he was surrounded by so many family members excitedly speaking over one another- the huge family that HE created. When he was lonely during covid, I bought his great-grandchildren to the window to see him and he said “see family is so great!” I’m so happy to have had you for as long as I did, and grateful for the memories I have of you. Rest my Nanu, until I see you again.

On May 10th we lost a very strong, funny and kind Nannu.

He showed us all how rewarding it was to be hard working, how great a cottage life is, that heavy pockets can be cured by giving away loose change, and that a smile and a laugh can go a long way. (If you didn’t know this already: Nannu jokes are the ultimate dad jokes)

Although it feels like the end of an era, the memories we all share will be eternal. Nannu is now together with Nanna, Auntie Miriam and even Grandpa. Needless to say, he’s in great company.

Until we meet again 🤍
