In Celebration of

Robert Preston Barclay

August 3, 1950 -  July 26, 2018

After a long illness, Robert passed away on Thursday, July 26, 2018 surrounded by family, at Trillium Health Partners, Mississauga, in his 68th year. Beloved husband of Janice, whose life with Robert began 50 years ago. Loving and proud father of David (Krista), Sandra, and Megan (Freddy). Cherished grandpa of Felix, Flora and Finnegan. Much loved brother of David (Betty Birrell) and Donald (Heather). Bob grew up in Montreal and became a chartered accountant, then a bank executive. He travelled to nearly every corner of the world, and called Mississauga home for most of his life. He finished his career at Scotiabank and then dedicated his retirement to helping children in need. He traveled the globe distributing bed kits with Sleeping Children Around the World, and then co-founded a charity, Support.Education.Togo, which has built much needed schools in Togo. One of these schools will be named in his honour this spring. Bob was an avid golfer and member of the Credit Valley Golf Club, and a beloved member of the Verandah community in Fort Myers, Florida, where he and Jan spent their winters. Bob was an ideal husband, father, and grandfather whose quiet, generous, funny, open spirit was a role model and inspiration for everyone who had the pleasure to know him. He will be greatly missed. The family wishes to express their gratitude to the staff at Sunrise of Mississauga for their fantastic care of Bob; the kind staff of the McCall Centre for Continuing Care; Dr. Gaspar Israelian for his hard work and attention; and the dedicated and seemingly tireless staff of the Trillium Health Partners, Mississauga.

If you would like to make a donation in Robert’s memory in lieu of flowers, please do so to Support.Education.Togo online at supporteducationtogo.org.

As a close friend of Bob’s I followed his health issues over the years. While he gradually lost his physical abilities he was always positive in his interactions and never focussed attention on himself and his condition. He was a model of grace.
He was passionate about his involvement in Sleeping Children Around the World and the contact that he had with the children to whom they distributed bed kits. He was even more passionate about Support.Education.Togo and building schools in Togo. There wasn’t a golf game that we didn’t hear about something that was going on with SETogo. His volunteer spirit and entrepreneurship in getting this charity up and running was exemplary.
I played golf with Bob every Saturday morning for 25 years and for many years in Florida where he introduced us to Verandah and got me into golf groups there. I have missed playing with him over the past three golf seasons and will continue to miss him in the years ahead. He was a model of even temperament and conducted himself as a gentleman on the golf course and everywhere else.
Rest in peace, my friend.
