In Celebration of

Rita Mattinson

December 2, 1933 - April 19, 2025

With profound sadness, the family of Rita Beatrice Mary (LeBlanc) Mattinson announces her passing on April 19, 2025, at Trillium Hospital in Mississauga.

Rita was born on December 2, 1933, in Saint John, New Brunswick, to the late Edmond and Elizabeth LeBlanc. Over the course of her life, she called many places home—including Calgary, Toronto, Coldbrook (Nova Scotia), Edmonton, and finally Mississauga.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Jennifer (Terry) Fischer and April (Loren Kousaie) Mattinson, and her cherished grandchildren, Nicholas and Shawn. Rita was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Cyril (“Cy”) Mattinson, her parents, and her siblings: Arthur, Lionel, Adrice, George, Joey, Claire Bond, Peggy Vitale, and Diana Gerrior.

Rita will be remembered most for her infectious sense of humour and playfulness. Whether performing her famous “monkey pose” or inventing crazy stories with her children, she brought joy and laughter to those around her. Her friends in the retirement community knew her as lively, quick-witted, and always up for a good laugh—or a competitive game of Bingo. Even in her final days, Rita’s spirited nature shone through, with hospital staff fondly describing her as a feisty and delightful patient.

In her younger years, Rita was a gracious and generous host. She and her husband loved to entertain, and Rita would impress guests with her delicious cooking, home made liquors, dancing, and occasional mischievous antics. She was also a fan of Canadian sports - often cheering on the Blue Jays or watching CFL football, and curling with Cy by her side.

Rita was also a passionate reader, a crossword and trivia enthusiast, and a lover of cats, chocolate, and a good glass of wine. A remarkably lucky gambler, she enjoyed both Bingo and casino visits—famously winning a car at Bingo before she’d even learned how to drive.

Rita’s life will be honoured in a private family ceremony in the coming weeks. Interment arrangements are being made at Mount Pleasant Cemetery near Oxford, Nova Scotia, with further details to be shared with family once finalized.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the dedicated PSWs, nurses, doctors, and support staff at Credit Valley and Trillium Hospitals for their compassionate care during Rita’s final months. Your kindness will never be forgotten.

In memory of Rita, donations may be made to the Lung Health Foundation, Ontario SPCA and Humane Society, or Trillium Health Partners (please use the donation tab at top right of page).
