In Celebration of

Richard "Dick" David Berrisford

August 2, 1938 -  December 5, 2023

Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan on August 2, 1938, died peacefully at home in Mississauga on December 5, 2023. Richard (Dick) is survived by Susan, his loving wife of 60 years, his son Michael (wife Melissa), and daughter Jane (Geoff). His everlasting pride and joy were his five grandchildren: Alana, Kaitlin, Haley, Holden, and Connor, all residing in British Columbia.

Much of Dick’s youth was spent in Saskatoon where his mother, Katherine Vaughan operated a thriving pharmacy. Dick enjoyed scouting and also discovered his aptitude as a fierce competitor in hockey and football. With strong teams and good teammates, several championships ensued. At the age of 18, he along with his mother, step-father Jack Vaughan, and younger step-brother Peter Vaughan relocated to Port Credit, Ontario. Interestingly, Dick tried out for the Dixie Beehives Hockey Club but the process led to the discovery that his player rights were already owned by the Chicago Blackhawks. Football was prominent at Port Credit Secondary School and it was as a Golden Warrior that Dick found a natural home on the field. Of note, the high school suffered a structure fire in 1956, just one day before the Championship game where much of the team equipment went up in flames. In the end the Golden Warriors could be proud that they were ‘United Appeal’ finalists. Much success on the gridiron also resulted in a broken collar bone in his senior year. This incident became the “lucky break” that would change the course of his life, as it was at the doctor’s office that he first met Susan Mason. Sue and Dick had their first date in 1959 at the PCSS school prom. Dating evolved to love, then marriage in July of 1963. The family grew as Dick and Sue became parents of two children; Michael David born in 1965 and Jane Susanne born in 1968. After marriage in 1963 he eventually settled in Mississauga. His career in the Men’s Wear industry began with a position with T. Eaton followed by successful employment with several major men’s fashion companies spanning 30 years. In addition to work, he enjoyed 25 years of curling at the Mississauga Golf & Country Club where he served as Curling Chairman for a period of time. He also volunteered his time and experience as a community hockey coach. Dick eventually turned his attention to practicing real estate which he enjoyed for 12-plus years until he retired in 2002.

With the family grown and the hard work behind him Dick enjoyed what is best described a dream retirement filled with a plethora of great friends, golf, Probus events, wine tastings and world travel. Health issues aside, it was during this time that Dick hit his stride both as a grandfather and by forging great friendships. His romantic partnership and lifelong commitment to Susan lasted for 60 years.

A ‘Celebration of Life’ with his family and friends will be held in Dick's honour, at the Mississaugua Golf and Country Club, 1725 Mississauga Rd. , on May 2, 2024, at 12:30 pm. In Dick’s memory, charitable donations can be made to Compass Lakeshore Community Outreach Centre.

Arrangements entrusted to the Turner & Porter "Peel" Chapel. Online condolences may be made using this website.
