Dr. Raynauld Ko February 17th 1971- August 11th, 2015

Having lived a life filled with love, music, success and discovery, Dr. Ray Ko set off on his greatest adventure on August 11, 2015. Ray embodied all that it means to be a great father, husband, friend and physician. He was intellectually gifted, musically talented, fearless and uncompromising in his pursuit of his goals. At the same time, he was warm and compassionate, generous with his time and counsel, and showed great humility in the face of his many successes.

In his work as a physician in the Department of Anesthesia at the University Health Network, Ray was a well-respected colleague and mentor, with exemplary clinical skills and an active involvement in teaching and administration. Ray practiced medicine with compassion, skill and empathy, never forgetting that each patient is a unique person entrusting their health to his care. His work in organ transplantation gave his patients new beginnings and many of them felt that they owed their lives and futures to his ability as a physician.

Ray was an avid cyclist, skier, world traveller and speed junkie, with a zest for life and for new experiences. He made time for his passions and shared them with his friends and family. Ray was known to golf with intermittent success, and was instantly recognizable in his Signature Ensemble of white shoes and a matching white belt, his long black locks tucked under a day-glo baseball cap. This made it easy for him to be found in the deep grass, where he often disappeared while searching for his wayward neon yellow golf ball.

Although he embraced many passions, Ray’s greatest joy came from his family, and the love of his wife Catherine and his three daughters Ardenne, Lausanne and Rochelle who, like their father, are fearless, driven and adventurous. They share their father’s sense of humour and playfulness, and approach life with the same positive energy and enthusiasm. Ray built an idyllic life with Catherine, and loved travelling with her as they explored the slopes, bike trails and fine restaurants of the world. Ray was also an accomplished and uncomplaining carrier of shopping bags from Catherine’s forays to the most stylish districts of the Western Hemisphere.

Throughout his illness, Ray was uncomplaining and was more concerned with how his illness would affect his family and friends. He faced his disease in the same manner that he lived his life: with focus, fearlessness and grace. He never gave in to despair, instead using his energy to comfort those around him. During this difficult time, Ray and Catherine have been supported by their family, especially Martin, Mia, Hailey, Audrey, Rainier, Amanda, Marie-Eve, Gregory, Maximilien, Victoria, Rose, Carole and Jean-Louis. The family also extends thanks to the medical teams at UHN and Trillium Health Partners, especially Dr. Asha Gupta.

Ray fought against an implacable enemy with every weapon at his disposal. His fight has now ended, and he is at peace. Those of us who knew him are better people for having Ray touch our lives and we must now mend our broken hearts and carry on.

A celebration of Ray’s life will be held on Saturday, August 15th, 2015 at 10am at Turner & Porter, Peel Chapel 2180 Hurontario Street, Mississauga, with a reception to follow. Visitation times are from 7pm-9pm on Thursday and Friday August 13th and 14th, 2015.
