Pietro 'Peter' Ongaro
June 15, 1931 - January 5, 2026
Peter Ongaro passed away peacefully at home, with his family by his side, on Monday, January 5, 2026, at the age of 94, surrounded by love, memories, and a gentle smile that reflected a life deeply and generously lived.
Peter was the beloved husband of the late May Ongaro, with whom he shared 51 devoted years of marriage. He was a proud, steady, and loving father to his daughter, Patricia (Jonathon Cardwell), and his son, Robert, always offering quiet guidance, support, and an unwavering presence. He was an adored grandfather—Nonno—to Simon and Samuel Cardwell, who brought him immense joy and in whom he took great pride. He was also a much-loved brother of Bruno and the late Antonio, Guido, and Maria.
Born in Italy, Peter immigrated to Canada in 1954 with courage, determination, and a strong work ethic. He built a life rooted in family and hard work, spending his career as a skilled cement finisher whose craftsmanship can be found in many of Toronto’s most iconic buildings and sites, leaving a lasting legacy in the city he proudly called home.
Peter’s greatest happiness came from time spent with others and from life’s simple pleasures. He loved fishing and spent countless days with friends on the water or sitting on the dock, rod in hand, sharing stories, laughter, and quiet companionship. He delighted in entertaining family and friends, especially when he was cooking his famous lasagna, and could often be found enjoying a drink and good conversation with his neighbours. Wherever he was—around the table, on the dock, or at home—Peter made everyone feel welcome.
He valued family, friendship, loyalty, and hard work, and he will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, gentle humour, and quiet pride.
