It is with deep love and sadness we announce the sudden passing of Peter John Jones on September 23, 2025 at the age of 94.
Pete was born in Middlesex, England on August 23, 1931. After graduating Technical School he moved to Canada and settled in Cobourg, Ontario. When a promising job opportunity came up with AECL (Atomic Energy of Canada) in Chalk River, Ontario, he jumped at the opportunity and made the move to Deep River, Ontario. It was there he met Lorna, who was to become the “love of his life”, working as a young bank teller. They were both “smitten” with each other and married soon after. When Pete’s job was transferred to Mississauga, Ontario they eventually moved with their two young children Lisa and Steven. Mississauga became their family home for the next 60 years. Pete had a successful career at AECL and retired after 35 years of service at the early age of 55.
Pete was a devoted family man who leaves behind his loving wife of 69 years Lorna (nee Small). He was an adored father to his predeceased daughter Lisa and son Steven (Monica). He was a proud “Papa” to his five grandchildren, Laural (Nick), Madeleine, Lindsey, Em (Natalie) and Brooke. He was loved and will be deeply missed by many other close family members, friends and neighbours whose lives he touched.
Pete was a gifted man with a special talent and passion for woodcarving. His lifelike carvings of ducks and birds were so detailed and realistic, they seemed almost “ready to take flight”, earning him recognition and awards at local carving shows. He spent countless hours perfecting his carvings in his basement workshop, pouring his heart into every piece, so much so that it became a family joke: if Pete wasn’t around, he was surely “in the basement with his ducks”! His carvings were more than art – they reflected his patience, skill, attention to detail and love of nature, and remain treasured by all who were fortunate to see them.
Pete loved being social and was very involved in his community. He was an active member of the Erindale Lions Club for many years, where he helped raise funds for Erin Oak Kids Centre for Treatment and Development. This was an organization close to his heart as his late daughter, Lisa struggled with Cerebral Palsy. He was also an avid member of The Ontario Woodcarvers Association, Mississauga Probus Club as well as a local Bridge Group. In his younger years he also enjoyed coaching and refereeing his son’s soccer games.
Pete was a devoted family man who cherished every moment with his loved ones. He was best known as a man with a warm heart and a dry British sense of humour, always ready with a witty remark in the most unexpected moments. A hallmark of his personality we all loved and adored. Whether cheering for his favourite soccer team or enjoying his evening Rye, he found joy in life’s simple pleasures. At 94, Pete was blessed with a long and full life.
We are forever grateful for the time we had with him, but it is still so hard to say goodbye to someone we all loved so dearly.
Forever loved, forever missed, forever in our hearts.
