In Celebration of

Paul Harvey Eckel

December 28, 1932 -  August 14, 2018

Peacefully at home in Toronto on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 after a valiant battle with cancer at the age of 85. Devoted husband of Joan (nee Palmer). Loving father of Stephen (Sue) and Cheryl Sampson (Ron). Cherished grandfather of Allyson, Wendy, Adam and Daniel. Dear brother of the late Robert (Vivienne) and Mary Drew (the late Ken). Paul will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews. After working 40 years at Atlas Alloys/Integris, Paul “retired to play”. And play he did -- curling with the Weston Golf & Country Club; golfing with the Chalet Etobicoke Seniors and the Humberside C.I. Golf Grads, visiting with the GOATS (Grumpy Old Administrators of Transportation Services), active member of the Delta Nu Alpha Transportation Network and long-time active member of the Islington United Church. Most of all Paul enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at home and at the cottage. He will be dearly missed. Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Butler Chapel, 4933 Dundas St. W. on Monday, August 20th from 6-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, August 21st at 11:00 a.m. at Islington United Church, 25 Burnhamthorpe Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Dorothy Ley Hospice or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

I first met Paul in 1974 as a "wet-behind-the-ears" trucking representative. Although I couldn't hope to be in his circle then, he would always greet me warmly, listen patiently and allow me the time of day. It wasn't until more than 20 years later when Paul and I were Board Members with the Delta Nu Alpha that our friendship started to flourish, and discussions weren't so much about business as they were about cars, and investments and family. He would ask me what I was doing with my CP stock and I would ask him when he was going to sell his Bre-X and Nortel, taking each feeble ribbing in his good-natured stride.
He shared with me in the Spring how much he was looking forward to celebrating your Diamond 60th Wedding Anniversary with you, Joan and on June 21st I was privileged to have coffee with Paul. We talked about getting together and doing that again, soon. Little did I know that would be my last opportunity.
While I have learned too late what an icon Paul was through the years on the Canadian Transportation scene, I am certainly grateful for times that I spent with him and proud to say that he was my friend. I will miss him.
I want to convey my most sincere sympathies and deepest condolences to you, Joan, and the entire family.
Most sincerely,
Bill Clark

I am so sorry for the loss of Paul. I know he fought hard but it was a battle he could not win. Joan, you and the family will miss him so much, but now he is at peace. Be good to yourselves and know my prayers are still with you at this time.

Joan and family, I send you my most sincere condolences at this very sad time. It was always such a pleasure to chat with Paul about all things IUC, especially his thoughts and recommendations about the property work to be done. We were so lucky to have you both in our church family. I'm sending prayers for your healing and peace.

I'm so sorry for your loss. You spoke of your Dad fondly - his battle with cancer, and not letting it hold him back from enjoying life. It's great that he got to enjoy his retirement. I know that you'll miss him greatly. My sympathies to all your family. Take Care. Sue

Joan: my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time. He was such a fine man - good friend and wonderful father and husband. My husband Stan enjoyed a special relationship with Paul both a work and away from work. Paul had integrity. He will be missed.
