In Celebration of

Paul Francis Gilgan

September 16, 1952 -  June 5, 2023

Paul passed away gently at Princess Margaret Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He refused to let this disease get in the way of his love of life and food. Yes, even hospital food.
Throughout his illness, Paul’s family and cherished friends shared memories of and gained insights into each other’s lives. To the end, he found joy in being out in the sun and the early summer breezes.
Middle of seven children, Paul never stood still, starting a successful business in Alberta while still in his 20’s. He was a favourite uncle to 24 nieces and nephews and their partners and 36 great-nieces and nephews.
Son of Mary Gilgan (nee Cachia) (soon to be 101), and the late Edward Gilgan, he will be deeply missed by his siblings John (Carolyn), Mary Louise Winkels (Fritz), Peter, Peggy Schreader (Don), Michelle Dermody (Ron Robb), and Martha Holt (Brad Lewis).
Paul had an exceptional passion for car racing and cars in general. Be it F1 or NASCAR, Daytona 500 or LeMans, Red Bull or Tuatara, he knew every aspect of all things involving speed.
In his retirement, Paul settled in the Philippines where he continued to expand his interests and circle of friends. Within that community, Paul has left a legacy of generosity. The family is most grateful to his many nurses and doctors, both at Toronto General Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital for their outstanding care and compassion. Special thanks to Jhes, his caregiver, for bringing a sense of calm during his sickness and to Miyo, always a ray of sunshine in Paul’s journey.
Friends may call at the Turner & Porter Neweduk-Erin Mills Chapel, 1981 Dundas St. W., Mississauga, on Sunday from 3-7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ignatius Loyola Catholic Church, 2300 Burnhamthorpe Rd., Mississauga, on Monday June 12, 2023 at 3 p.m. Online condolences may be made through www.turnerporter.ca.

Paul was a great friend. He was a fun, super-informative, wise conversationalist. When the Philippine government locked me and similarly situated foreigners like me out of the Philippines during the pandemic, Paul, who was there, gladly spent his time helping me with things I seriously needed done there. Throughout the many years Paul lived in the Philippines, he continually and merrily gave presents and contributions to scores of Filipinos, mutual friends of ours, for celebrations, emergencies, and miscellaneous occasions. He was better than Daddy Warbucks to them, and they loved him. Countless people like me will miss Paul, and he deserves to be missed.
