In Celebration of

Norma Mary Bassett (née Logan)

August 4, 1932 -  July 25, 2025

Peacefully, on Friday, July 25, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Hospital at the age of 92. Beloved wife of the late George. Cherished mother of the late Carolyn (Andrew Goodman). Also predeceased by siblings Elizabeth Scott (Kenneth) and brother Hugh Logan (Marie).

Norma was born in east-end Toronto and raised in a home that instilled in her a love of books and music, and encouraged her boundless curiosity. She attended Riverdale Collegiate and went on to attend Normal School. Early adulthood required Norma to work several office jobs.

A stint as a teacher in Northern Ontario preceded adventures traveling in Europe prior to marriage. With George, she settled in Etobicoke, lovingly raising Carolyn. She was an active member of the church, a staunch member of the Richard III society, an avid stamp collector and maker of exquisite needlepoint crafts.

Despite her bookish nature, she had a wide social circle and enjoyed connecting with informal stories on one hand, and serious history on the other.

Not always one to showcase the profound intellect that lurked inside, Norma aimed to cheer you up with “Loganesque” humour. Her disarming nature formed many lifelong bonds.

In memory of Norma, please consider donating to funds supporting undergraduate students at a small university such as Trent or UNB.

Visitation will be held at Royal York Road United Church, 851 Royal York Rd, Etobicoke on Sunday, August 10th from 12:15 – 1:00 p.m. The service will begin at 1 p.m. with a reception to follow.

So sorry to hear of Norma's death. We have fond memories or her from our days at Royal York Rd United Church. We remember her lovingly. As Thomas Moore wrote,

"Long long may my heart with such memories filled,
Like a vase in which roses once were distilled.
You may break, you may shatter that vase, if you will,
But the scent of the roses will hang round it still."

The scent of Norma's life will hang around ours for a long time.

I knew Norma through the Richard III Society of Canada where she was indeed a staunch member. It didn't matter how far away the Sunday afternoon meeting might be, she took the public transit there and back, sometimes spending longer travelling than the meeting itself took. But she seldom missed a meeting. When she decided to sell her house, I was not at all surprised that she waited till she could get a 2 bedroom apartment. She had so many interests! Her unfailing good cheer was a delight and always made the day brighter. She is greatly missed.

Norma’s boundless enthusiasm and love of life carried her well into her 90th decade. She was part of our family for the last three decades and will be dearly missed by the Goodmans.
